Purdue Repertory Dance Company presents spring concert

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Eight new dance works created by Purdue University student and faculty choreographers will be presented April 25 and 26 by the Purdue Repertory Dance Company during Spring Works 2008.

The modern dance company will offer performances at 7:30 p.m. April 25 and at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. April 26 in the Nancy T. Hansen Theatre in Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts.

“Company dancers have been working since January, developing the ideas and visions of the choreographers,” said Carol Cunningham-Sigman, chair of the dance division in the Patti and Rusty Rueff Department of Visual and Performing Arts. “This concert includes works that range from a playful ballet work to an intense exploration of sin using a cast with six men and two women.”

Tickets to the performances are $12 for the general public, $10 for students and $6 for children ages 12 and under. Reserved tickets can be purchased in the Loeb, Elliott Hall of Music and Pao Hall box offices or by calling (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. Tickets also are available through Ticketmaster outlets at (765) 743-5151.

Works in the show include:

– “Sonic Gesture,” created by dance faculty member Mary Beth Van Dyke. The dance features 10 women who combine traditional jazz movement and contemporary hip-hop vocabulary. It is set to original jazz music composed by local musician Jamie Newman. Live musicians will be on stage during this dance.

– “Around the Bend,” created by Cunningham-Sigman. The piece is a lyrical dance work that creates images of individuals traveling through an expansive landscape seeking peace and beauty.

– “Joplin Juxtaposition,” created by dance faculty member Melodie Carr. This work is a ballet piece inspired by the music of Scott Joplin, performed on pointe by eight women wearing black and white with a splash of color.

– “Seeds of Sin,” created by Shanna Daly, a doctoral candidate in engineering education from Florence, Ky. The dance explores the tension of a powerful force growing inside a pure community of people.

– “Current Effect,” created by Michal Nevitt, a senior in fine arts from Chesterton, Ind. This work, inspired by the movement of water and waves, focuses on the cause and effect of the dancers’ movements as they come together and separate in space.

– “With Reason,” created by Kristina Katrus, a senior in visual communications design from Middletown, Ohio. This dance shows a vulnerable individual torn between longing for someone who is hurting her consistently and her peers’ cries to her to let it go.

– “Royal Decay,” created by community member Edward S. Martin III. This large group work contrasts a regal air and a regimented quality with a descent into chaos with a voyeuristic twist.

– “Caprice,” created by Joel M. Baughn, a senior in fine arts from Columbus, Ind. The dance explores the continually changing mood of individuals and groups.
