Black Voices of Inspiration collaborate with Bach Chorale Singers for a soulful celebration of song

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue University Black Voices of Inspiration along with the Bach Chorale Singers of Lafayette will present the Black History Month concert “Rock-A-My-Soul” at 4 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 21) at First Baptist Church, 411 N. Seventh St., Lafayette, Ind.

The first half of the concert will include the work “Changed My Name,” a cantata that chronicles the lives of Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth. It was written by Linda Twine, whose musical accomplishments include a variety of spiritual and jazz compositions, as well as more than 30 years experience of Broadway musical directorship. Twine is the composer and musical director/conductor of “The Color Purple” on Broadway.

This musical celebration also will include a presentation of contemporary spirituals and gospel music during the program’s second half. This is the first time that these two ensembles will collaborate.

The Bach Chorale Singers is conducted by William Jon Gray, an assistant professor of music at the Indiana University School of Music. The Black Voices of Inspiration is conducted by Twana A. Harris, who is the Black Cultural Center’s full-time artist-in-residence.

“The experience of the spiritual is one that connects body, mind and spirit,” Harris says. “Having the opportunity to share that connection with the Bach Chorale singers will develop our ensemble musically and provide all of the joys that accompany the fellowship of music making. The audience can expect to be moved, inspired and thoroughly entertained as we remember those who have struggled for freedom and equality, as well as honor the spirit and the faith that contributes so much to the identity of all peoples.”

Tickets are $25 for the general public, $23 for seniors ages 62 and older, and $16 for children and students. Tickets can be ordered by calling the Bach Chorale office at 765-429-5151 or going online to
