TAF, Friends of Bob offer free music classes for area youth

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Greater Lafayette area teens who love to play and create music and songs will have two new opportunities to develop and hone skills during February, March and April. Tippecanoe Arts Federation partners with Friends of Bob Music Co-op to present a great guitar program for 8th through 12th Graders, and with SAMI (Songwriters’ Association of Mid-North Indiana) to showcase a songwriting class for 14 to 19 year olds.

Six String Shwiggity is for teens who seriously love to play guitar. Friends of Bob artists will guide a peer-to-peer music exchange: kids will learn cool stuff from one another, jamming twice a month on Thursday afternoons, 4:00 to 5:30, February 3 and 17, March 3 and 17, and April 7 and 21 at TAF headquarters, 638 North Street in Lafayette. Kids wanting to participate will need to already know how to play simple chord progressions, at a minimum, and bring their guitar.

SAMI’s hip, supportive and experienced members will teach Songwriting Basics on Wednesday afternoons, 4:00 to 5:30, February 9 and 23 and March 9 and 23, also at the TAF headquarters. SAMI will introduce fledgling songwriters basic techniques, helpful writing exercises, tips on how to collaborate, and how to create “something out of nothing.” This is a great opportunity to get a head start in SAMI’s annual competition that provides songwriting scholarships to area teens. Application deadline for that is April 15.
