Imagination Station to close Saturday, Feb 28

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Imagination Station, located at 600 North Fourth Street in Downtown Lafayette, will close its doors to the public on Saturday, February 28th, and will shutter completely on March 2nd, 2009. The science, space and technology hands-on center for children has struggled to remain viable since opening in October 1996, according to a statement released last week.

Previously scheduled programs and events have been canceled. This includes Hands-On Trucks originally scheduled for June 2009. The board plans to remain active while formulating a plan of action for the building and displays, and will continue to look for a means of resurrecting the hands-on science programming.

“This is undoubtedly a ‘can do’ community that needs and wants a hands-on science, space and technology center. The Imagination Station board wants that center to continue someplace in our community! We are encouraged by the offers of support and partnerships that the mission of Imagination Station will reemerge in the future,” said Kathy Weedon, President of the Board.

According to the statement, the board continues to believe that the Greater Lafayette community can support a hands-on educational science center through “the right partnerships”, and interested parties and organizations will be encouraged to present proposals for the building, displays and supplies.

“Our sincere hope is that we can find a way to preserve the programming opportunities for children in the Lafayette area that add to the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math initiative (STEM) in the State of Indiana,” Weedon added.

Imagination Station began fifteen years ago as a grassroots organization sustained through memberships, volunteers, and philanthropic organizations supporting science, space and technology for the young minds in the Greater Lafayette community.
