Domestic violence forum scheduled for Tuesday, April 6

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Nancy Gabin, Purdue University associate professor of history, will be among the panelists Tuesday (April 6) for a YWCA forum about the history, causes and the law concerning domestic violence.

The forum Joining Hands to Stop Violence, will start at 6 p.m. at University Church and is free and open to the public.

In addition to Gabin, speakers include YWCA’s legal advocate Nora Ashcraft, who will speak on domestic violence and the law, and YWCA Hispanic advocate Nohemi Lugo, who will offer a cultural perspective of interpersonal violence.

“Domestic violence is a serious problem, and we need to come together as a community and talk about what we can do to prevent it,” said Danielle Gaylord, program director of the YWCA Domestic Violence Intervention and Prevention Program. “Domestic violence does not discriminate and can affect anyone.”

There were 53 deaths in Indiana from 2008-2009 due to domestic violence, according to the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
