Central Catholic students take 4th at National History Day Competition

Central Catholic Junior-Senior High School students, Samuel Kochert and Peter Thompson, are all smiles after taking 4th place during the National History Day Competition at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD.

LAFAYETTE, Ind.– Central Catholic Junior-Senior High School ninth grade students, Samuel Kochert and Peter Thompson, took 4th place in the Senior Group Exhibit category at The Kenneth E. Behring National History Day competition at the University of Maryland in College Park, MD. The students collaborated on a project titled, The Camera: Bringing the Civil War into Focus. More than 2,400 students, parents, and teachers attended the competition that took place June 13-17, 2010.

More than a million students are encouraged by teachers nationwide to participate in National History Day contests across the country. Students choose historical topics related to a theme, conduct research, draw conclusions, and present those conclusions in original papers, websites exhibits, and documentaries. Projects are entered into competitions at the local and state levels during the spring and evaluated by professional historians and educators. Students aspire to make it to the national competition held in the summer.

Central Catholic has been an active participant in National History Day (NHD) activities since 1980. History teacher Mary Anthrop coordinates the History Day Program at Central Catholic. Her students are encouraged to participate in NHD activities and competitions as a way to enhance their coursework in history. NHD activities and competitions help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, research and reading skills, oral and written communication and presentations skills, as well as self esteem, confidence, and social responsibility.
