Visiting youth to perform charity benefit, community service projects

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Young people from across the nation will participate in several community outreach events on July 10 and 11 as part of the 2010 National Youth Convention of the New Apostolic Church.

Nearly 1,200 of the conventioneers, ages 13-25, will participate in the 2010 Lafayette CureSearch for Children’s Cancer 5 K Walk to raise funds for childhood cancer research, beginning at 8 a.m., July 10. They will raise money in their local communities for CureSearch prior to arriving in West Lafayette, and will meet with local children and families that are directly affected by childhood cancer.

“CureSearch needs private citizens and corporations to help us raise every possible dollar for children’s cancer research,” says John L. Lehr, president and CEO of the Bethesda, Md.-based CureSearch.

The group will plant gardens, work in food pantries, prepare meals for the homeless, participate in clean-up projects at local camps and entertain at local retirement homes as part of its community outreach activities.

On Sunday, July 11, the New Apostolic Church National Youth Choir will perform a benefit concert for the local community. “Heritage With Soul,” featuring the 200-voice choir, will begin at 7 p.m., in the Elliott Hall of Music on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus. The concert will benefit LUM, to help support their mission of sending Lafayette area underprivileged children to summer camp.
