Franciscan St. Elizabeth Health, Kathryn Weil Center announce Heart Month activities

Heart Month Activities in Greater LafayetteLAFAYETTE, Ind. — Franciscan St. Elizabeth Health and the Kathryn Weil Center for Education announce several Heart Month activities during February for residents of the Greater Lafayette community to participate in.

Don’’t Have a Stroke: Stroke Awareness and Handling Anger’: Tuesday, Feb. 3, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Carol Bailey, R.N., MSN, division director of Intensive Care Services, and Nicky Smith, M.S., LMHC, will present “Don’t Have a Stroke: Stroke Awareness and Handling Anger” at the February “Lunch and Learn.” Bailey and Smith will discuss risk factors, signs of stroke, importance of prompt treatment and ways to handle anger in positive ways.

Lunch is available for $6 for Spirit of Women members and $7 for non-members at 11:30 a.m. with the free educational program starting at noon. The program will be held at the Kathryn Weil Center for Education. Reservations are required and must be received by noon on Wednesday, Feb. 2. Go Red Day: Friday, Feb. 4: Celebrate National Go Red Day by wearing red in support of living a heart-healthy life. Also, Heartland Gifts, Heartland Gifts, Too and the St. Elizabeth Central gift shop will have 25% off all red items.

Cholesterol screenings: Thursday, Feb. 10: The Kathryn Weil Center for Education will offer cholesterol screenings for $30. The screening includes checking total cholesterol, HDL, total cholesterol/HDL ratio, triglycerides, LDL and glucose levels. Registration is required and can be made by calling the center at (765) 449-5133.

Blood pressures at the mall: Saturday, Feb. 19, 2 to 6 p.m.: The Kathryn Weil Center for Education and the St. Elizabeth School of Nursing will provide free blood pressure checks at the Tippecanoe Mall. This event is a preview of the fourth annual Day of Dance that will be held at the mall on Saturday, Feb. 26.

Recipe Exchange: Heart Healthy Eating and Cooking: Tuesday, Feb. 22, 6:30 p.m.: St. Elizabeth’s Food and Nutrition Services will present “Recipe Exchange: Heart Healthy Eating and Cooking” in the Heartland Café at St. Elizabeth East. The café is accessible through the North Entrance at St. Elizabeth East, 1701 S. Creasy Lane in Lafayette.

During this program, Chef Bob Newell, CEC, executive chef for Food and Nutrition Services, and Ashley Kim, R.D., a registered dietitian for Food and Nutrition Services, will provide a cooking demonstration and samples of heart healthy snacks and provide heart-healthy meal ideas. Participants are also invited to bring in their favorite recipes so dietitians can review them and make suggestions on how to make their dishes healthier.

This event is free, but registration is required and can be made by calling the Kathryn Weil Center for Education at (765) 449-5133.

Day of Dance: Saturday, Feb. 26, noon to 6 p.m. at Tippecanoe Mall: Bring your friends and family to dance, learn simple ways to stay healthy, enjoy music, participate in health screenings and view a fashion show by Macy’s. This event is free and registration is not required.
