Radio tower collapse kills 2

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A radio tower in northeastern Tippecanoe County collapsed this morning, killing 2 men who were adding another segment onto the structure.

At approximately 8:51a, Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched along with Buck Creek Fire and Rescue and T.E.A.S. Paramedics to a location southeast of the intersection of C.R. 900 East and C.R. 600 North in reference to the reported collapse of a radio tower.

Upon arrival at the scene, deputies learned that a five man crew from ERI, Incorporated of Chandler, Indiana was in the process of installing a radio tower at the site. Two members of a three man crew on the tower had apparently been working at about 340 feet when they fell along with a piece of equipment being used to add another segment to the tower.

Killed in the accident were 32 year old, Paul Aliff, of Mesquite, Texas and 29 year old Ernest Garcia of Laredo, Texas. Further investigation into the accident will be conducted by the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office and the Indiana Occupational Health and Safety Administration (IOSHA).
