Voter Registration

When can I register to vote?

You can register if you will be 18 years of age on the date of the next election (which means you can register when you’re 17 as long as your 18th birthday is before the first Tuesday in November).

You also need to have lived in your precinct for at least 30 days before the election, and you need to not be in prison after having been convicted of having been convicted of a crime.

Also, voter registration closes 30 days before the election. So don’t expect to register the day before the election because it will be too late!

Where can I register to vote?

In Tippecanoe County, you can register to vote when you get your driver’s license at the BMV, at the City Clerk’s Office in Lafayette or West Lafayette, or you can register at the Tippecanoe County Board of Elections and Registration on the 3rd floor of the County Office Building on the corner of Columbia and 3rd streets in Downtown Lafayette.

Board of Registration’s Physical Address:
County Office Building
Third Floor
20 North 3rd Street
Lafayette, IN 47901

Mailing Address:
Tippecanoe County Board of Elections & Registration
PO Box 619
Lafayette, IN 47902-0619

Do I have to go in person? Can’t I register to vote online?

Actually, yes. You CAN register to vote online in Indiana.

IN SVRS (www.indianavoters.com) is a self-service site for handling a few different voting related situations. On that site, you can:

  • Look up a poll location
  • Check your voter registration status
  • Check your provisional ballot status
  • Seek out county voter registration contact information, and
  • Print out a voter registration application form in English or Spanish

The system only works when your first AND last name AND date of birth AND county of birth exactly match what’s in the system. If the info doesn’t exactly hit on all of those fields, it won’t return any results. If there is more than one match, the software asks for additional information to identify the Voter Registration record — information like the last 4 digits of your SSN or driver’s license number (DLN).

If there is no exact match, you will be directed to contact the Voter Registration Office for assistance.

I don’t want to go in person, and I don’t trust those interwebs. Can’t I just mail something in?

If you would rather not fill out the voter registration forms in person, you can:

  • Download the Voter Registration Form (English) or Voter Registration Form (Spanish) from the Indiana Secretary of State Office and mail it in, OR
  • Pick up forms from these locations:
    • Reference desks, Tippecanoe County and West Lafayette public libraries
    • Lafayette, West Lafayette and Tippecanoe School Corp. offices
    • Ivy Tech State College
    • Purdue University:
      • Freehafer Hall: Personnel Services Office
      • Hovde Hall: Bursar’s Office
      • Smalley Center: Residence Hall Administration Office
      • MSHA Building: Married Student Housing Administration
      • Northwestern Avenue Parking Garage: Visitor Information Center
    • All township Trustees’ offices
    • Battle Ground, Clarks Hill, Dayton, Otterbein and Shadeland town halls
    • Tippecanoe County Extension Office
    • Tax forms mailed by the Indiana Department of Revenue
    • Forms must be postmarked or hand-delivered to Voter Registration office no later than 30 days before the next election.

Who can I call if I have questions?

For more information, or to find out where to vote please call (765) 423-9303 or (765) 423-9316, or email electionboard@tippecanoe.in.gov

What are the requirements to register?

To vote in the next election, you must be:

  • Registered 30 days before the election
  • Must be 18 years old by the date of the election
  • a U.S. citizen
  • Reside in your precinct for at least 30 days before the election
  • Are not currently in prison

When registering, you must provide the board with the following information:

  • Name
  • Residence and mailing addresses
  • Date of birth
  • Previous registration address and name
  • Signature
  • Home phone and Social Security number are optional

Do I have to pick a party to be a member of when I register?

Nope! In Indiana, voters do not declare party affiliation at registration.

How do I know if my registration was processed in time?

Voter applicants are mailed postcard-sized acknowledgments that list precinct and voting districts. The notices are used to verify address. Cards returned as undeliverable are pulled from the active file.

What if I file late?

Forms postmarked after the cutoff date (30 days before the next scheduled general election) will be held and processed when registration resumes December 1. Forms signed at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, the Lafayette or West Lafayette City Clerk’s offices or the Voter Registration office after the cutoff will be held until December 1.

Voters who filed address changes after the cutoff may be eligible to vote in their old precincts.

Where do I go to actually cast my ballot?

Check with the Tippecanoe County Government’s website to see where you should go to vote. There are photos and directions to the polling places on their website, and it is probably the most up-to-date and accurate site to get information about polling places for the current election cycle.
