Cornerstone Fall Festival: Rock Out for Autism

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Cornerstone Autism Foundation is hosting “Rock Out for Autism” on September 29th, 2012 at the Long Center for the Performing Arts in Downtown Lafayette, Indiana. This concert event will celebrate the lives touched by autism, and the money raised will benefit children and families affected by autism in Indiana. “Rock Out for Autism” is part of the Foundation’s fall festival weekend. Festivities also include a Ride for Autism and Family Fun for Autism.

The concert begins at 7:00p and is schedule to end at midnight. Tickets are $35 for Preferred Seating, $30 General Admission, and $25 with Student ID.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue Women’s Club will “Visit Main Street, Block by Block” and tour Downtown Lafayette and visit local merchants on Friday, September 21st. The event is offered in conjunction with Ladies Lunch Out and is open to the public.

Linda Elmore will demonstrate a process called lampworking. This is a type of glasswork that uses a gas fueled torch to melt rods and tubes of clear and colored glass. Once in a molten state, the glass is formed by blowing and shaping with tools and hand movements.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Community Cancer Network’s inaugural “Carry the Torch Walk” will be held on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at Riehle Plaza in Downtown Lafayette. The 2.5 mile, family friendly walk through Lafayette and West Lafayette is designed to show local cancer patients that the whole community is supporting them in their fight. Walkers are encouraged to collect donations, and all proceeds will benefit the Community Cancer Network in Lafayette, IN. All participants will receive a free commemorative t-shirt.

Founded in Lafayette in 2007, the Community Cancer Network provides non-medical support to local cancer patients and their families. Food from their onsite pantry, transportation, fuel assistance, prescription co-pays, rent and utilities are just some of the many services offered. Guests can enjoy free hot dogs, cotton candy, crackerjacks, popcorn and other circus treats; learn how clowns put on their makeup; and watch a one-person performance about P.T. Barnum and other famous circus professionals at 11:00a and 1:00p.

“We’ll have thousands of pieces on display in multiple scales, from Z scale (1:220) to 1:24 scale,” said Ralph Johnson, a Westminster resident, who’s been building circus models since 1954.

“Wagons, trains, trucks, animals and circus acts will fill 24 tables in Whitsel Hall. Most of these circus displays are models of what you would have seen between 1900 and 1950, when trains transported the circus,” Johnson said.

Outside, a 12-foot, side-opening trailer will feature a 1:48-size moving display that took 20 years to make. “It has 27 miniature motors under the tables, 500 miniature light bulbs, 600 people, 168 animals and circus music playing,” Johnson said. Another outside attraction will be a miniature, working air calliope.

The event is part of a year of 35th anniversary celebration activities marking the founding of Westminster Village.

Opened in 1976 as a continuing care community and expanded over the years, Westminster Village is today home to 350 residents who live in single-family houses, independent-living apartments, assisted living apartments and the Health Center at Westminster Village.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Riggs Community Health Center (Riggs CHC) in Lafayette will host it’s 3rd annual Pre-school and Kindergarten Round Up offering preschool/immunizations and physicals.

The Round Up is scheduled at Riggs CHC on Saturday, June 27th from 9am to 2pm. Appointments are encouraged and may be made by calling 765-429-2710. Walk-in appointments will be available on a first come-first serve basis. Riggs CHC’s dental program will be operating from 9am to 2pm by appointment only.

Immunizations will be free of charge, and the cost of the physical is $20. Families also have the option receive a dental exam for $35.

Parents with preschoolers/kindergarteners need to bring complete immunization records for each child.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Two Indiana musicians will provide entertainment at the Lafayette Farmers’ Market this Saturday, June 6th, between 7:30a and noon. Danny Weiss, a Greater Lafayette-based saxophonist and clarinetist, will be performing from 7:30a–9:00a. Indiana-based New Age musician, Jeff Pearce, will be performing from 10:00a until 12:00p.

Danny Weiss leads several groups performing regularly in West Lafayette, Indiana, his home for the past 10 years. He is interested in all forms of music and has performed in many Latin and Caribbean bands (merengue, cumbia, salsa, and ska) as well as Motown (with the Temptations) and Jewish folk music (with Yid Vicious).

Jeff Pearce is well known to the ambient/new age music community for his unique approach to the guitar and Chapman Stick. Whether playing intimate acoustic music or crafting deep-space drifts, he composes music which uniquely combines melody and mystery.
