LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- There is still time to apply for a Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. The deadline is noon on Thursday January 17, 2008.
The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program provides recipients with full tuition and fees for four years of undergraduate education at any public or private accredited Indiana college or university. The scholarship also provides up to $800 per year for required books and equipment. Four scholarships will be awarded in Tippecanoe County in 2008.
One of the unique aspects of the Lilly Endowment program is that non-traditional students can apply. "It's a great opportunity for someone who has always wanted a college education but could not afford it," says Doug Eberle, President and CEO of The Community Foundation of Greater Lafayette. "This is one of the ways we can help people in our community, those who have been in the work force or who have been raising families instead of focusing on their own higher education goals." Four non-traditional scholarships have been awarded since 1998.
Applicants must graduate from an accredited Indiana high school by the end of June 2008, be a U.S. citizen, and be a resident of or attending high school in Tippecanoe County. Selection criteria include: school and community activities, work experience and evidence of leadership; recommendations; essay; unique circumstances; financial need; academics; neatness and thoroughness; and an interview for finalists.
In addition, applicants can have no more than 13 hours of previous college credit toward a baccalaureate degree. The application deadline is 12 noon on January 17, 2008.
In an effort to increase the number of college graduates with baccalaureate degrees within the state of Indiana, Lilly Endowment Inc. funds community foundations across the state to provide administration for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships. The Community Foundation of Greater Lafayette sponsors this program for Tippecanoe County and has administered 44 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships since 1998. 24 of those students have now completed undergraduate degrees.
