LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Sports facility developer Group 11 Inc. and a sport figure Shek Borkowski have unveiled plans for a recreational sports complex at the Lafayette Sports Center.

The first phase of the project is to include one state of the art indoor field constructed with synthetic turf ProGrass and soccer performance facility. Later phases are to include a full size synthetic turf outdoor field, weight-training and physical therapy facilities.

"It will be a beautiful full-service, family-friendly complex," said Borkowski. "We are going to appeal to all programs - youth soccer, high school, college, and adult leagues."

The facility located at 3832 Fortune Drive, which will remain named Lafayette Sports Center, is designed to meet, as a result a proliferation of soccer programs and leagues, the growing soccer demand for playing and professional training facility.

Borkowski said the group will start leagues and programs in the fall, with first field ready for play by October. The outdoor field, expected to be completed by next April, will be available for 30 youth soccer games per week, according to the developers. The facility will also be available for touch football, rugby, and lacrosse.

While playing fields traditionally have been public amenities provided by local governments, the construction of commercial recreation facilities, both indoor and outdoor, is a growing trend, according to David Czesniuk, director of operations for Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society.

"There just aren't enough indoor and outdoor fields to go around in the US," Czesniuk said." It may be the way to go because of the growing number of programs and adult leagues."

Officials in Lafayette, and spokesmen for local sports and recreation programs, are said to welcome the new facility.

Borkowski said the facilities will be attractive venues for soccer and other sports. He said there also are plans to bring a professional soccer women's and men's teams.

Group 11 vice president Kevin Morrow said his firm is pleased to have Borkowski developing and operating the facility. He said Borkowski will be involved in day-to-day management. "He will be doing camps, leagues, tournaments and running exhibition games. He will be very much a part of this."

Borkowski also stated that the group is negotiating with Soccer+ Performance about locating at the Lafayette Sports Center.

Soccer+ Performance is one of the world's premier provider of advanced soccer performance enhancement training programs. Through a systematic series of supervised training protocols and specifically designed exercises, Soccer+ Performance enhance the physical performance of soccer players of all ages and ability.
