WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -– The Purdue women’s tennis team has added a five-star recruit in the early signing period, head coach Laura Glitz announced Monday.
Mara Schmidt signed with the Boilermakers to become the first member of the team’s 2010 class. The Lakewood Ranch, Fla., native is ranked 72nd in this year’s class by tennisrecruiting.net. Schmidt, who has put together a 41-36 tournament record, defeated world No. 580 Natalia Cheng in the first round of the $10,000 WTA tournament in Managua, Nicaragua, this past May.
“I am excited to Mara has chosen Purdue,” Glitz said. “She is not only a great tennis player, but an outstanding person and student. Mara brings a wealth of national and international experience to Purdue. Her work ethic, competitive attitude and all-around game will impact our program immediately and help us climb in the national and Big Ten rankings.”
In July, Schmidt won the consolation singles bracket at the USTA National in Tallahassee, Fla., by defeating three ranked foes. That same month, she won three rounds at the USTA National Clay Court Championships in Memphis. In September, Schmidt advanced to the semifinal round in doubles at the Summer Smash Regional Championships in Delray, Fla.
Glitz and assistant coach Brooke Beier expect to finalize their 2010 class during the spring signing period.
