Women’s Basketball: Purdue loses to Northwestern, 60-58

EVANSTON, Ill. — The Purdue women’s basketball team took a 12-point lead on a fastbreak layup by Jodi Howell at 9:08 to play at Northwestern, but was held without a field goal the rest of the way to lose 60-58 in Evanston, Ill.

This loss snaps a 21-game win streak against the Wildcats that dated back to 1997 and drops the Boilermakers to 0-1 in the Big Ten and 3-5 overall.

Purdue built an 11-point lead in the first half, but it was whittled to just a one-point advantage at the end of the first half. The Boilermakers’ 12-point margin in the second period was the largest of the game, but it was followed by an 11-0 run by Northwestern that gave the Wildcats just their second lead of the game at 57-56. Purdue regained the advantage at 58-57 on two free throws by Brittany Rayburn with 2:03 to play, but missed three shots down the stretch.

Northwestern’s junior center Amy Jaeschke hit a tough turnaround fade-away jumper with 26 seconds on the clock to give the Wildcats the victory.

Howell led Purdue with 17 points on a perfect shooting performance from the field. The 5-foot-11 senior was 6 of 6 from the floor, including 3 of 3 from three-point range and 2 of 2 from the free throw line. She also contributed a season-high four rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Point guard FahKara Malone dished out a career-high tying mark of 10 assists and scored 11 points while turning the ball over just once in 37 minutes of play. It is Malone’s first double-double of her career.

Jaeschke led Northwestern with 16 points and seven rebounds while Brittany Orban chipped in 10 ponts and freshman Dannielle Diamant scored 10 to go with six rebounds.

Purdue has a week off before playing its fifth consecutive road game at Oakland on Dec. 13 at 1:30 p.m. ET.
