Men’s Tennis opens 2010 season this weekend

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -– The Purdue men’s tennis team opens its 2010 competition schedule this weekend by hosting the Boilermaker Invitational as well as the first two dual matches of the season.

“We are excited to open our 2010 schedule in front of our fans,” head coach Pawel Gajdzik said. “We have been preparing for this weekend since the fall season ended, and I believe each one of our guys is ready to get out there and play again. Hopefully, our fans will come out in full force and make this truly one of the best home-court advantages in the country.”

Senior P.J. Rose led the Boilermakers with 10 singles wins in the fall. The Highland, Ill., native swept through the Flight A singles brackets at the Wildcat Fall Invitational and Purdue Fall Invitational to claim those titles. He also picked up two wins at the Big Ten Singles Championships and one win at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional. Rose also teamed with junior Eric Ramos, who did not participate in singles during the fall, to post a spotless 4-0 record in doubles.

Senior Branko Kuzmanovic posted the highest winning percentage on the team in singles play during the fall as he won 80 percent of his matches. Sophomore Jan-Frans Engelbrecht followed Rose on the list of most singles wins in the fall by collecting six victories throughout the four tournaments.

Sophomore Matt Manasse compiled five singles wins while appearing in all four tournaments for the Boilermakers, and classmate Thomas Wilson earned three singles wins in just two tournaments. Freshman Billy Heuer saw action in the final three tournaments of the fall and posted a singles win in each. Seniors Slavko Bijelica and Paul Foley each were able to gain two singles wins in limited action during the fall.

The Boilermaker Invitational also features Eastern Kentucky, Valparaiso, Western Michigan and a limited squad from Ohio State. Action begins Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m. ET from the Schwartz Tennis Center.
After wrapping up the Boilermaker Invitational, Purdue is taking advantage of a national holiday Monday and hosting a doubleheader to kick off the dual-match portion of the schedule. The team faces Eastern Kentucky at 10 a.m. before squaring off with Eastern Illinois, the alma matter of assistant coach Brandon Lenfert, at 3 p.m.

Admission to all matches at the Schwartz Tennis Center is free.
