Taxes + Utilities


The State income tax rate is 3.4%. Tippecanoe County residents pay a County Option Income Tax (0.6%) and a County Economic Development Tax (0.4%) on individual adjusted gross incomes.

Sales Tax
Indiana residents pay 6% tax on retail sales except grocery items and prescription drugs. Consumer goods purchased outside the state are subject to Indiana’s use tax.

Property Tax
All tangible property is subject to varying taxation rates based on local taxing-unit needs and assessed valuations. Land and buildings are assessed at one-third true cash value as of March 1 each year. Household goods are exempt. Semi-tractor trailers with gross weights exceeding 11,000 pounds, boats, outboard motors, and airplanes are subject to property tax and must be reported to the county assessor. Business equipment is subject to personal property tax.

Tourism/Occupancy Tax
Hotels and motels charge 5% tax. The money collected is used to repay bonds for the construction of the Tippecanoe Amphitheater and to fund the Greater Lafayette Conventions & Visitors Bureau.

Cable television is provided to all of Lafayette, West Lafayette and many rural areas by Insight Communications. Information for a hook-up can be taken over the telephone, (765) 447-6886, or by visiting the office at 325 South Creasy Lane. Installation is usually within three days after ordering.

Telephone service in Lafayette, West Lafayette, and some of the surrounding rural areas is provided by Verizon. Other rural areas are served by private companies. New Verizon customers may fill out applications at the Tippecanoe Mall Phone Mart. Service may also be started by calling 1.800.483.4600.

Persons living within Lafayette or West Lafayette city limits will be served by the city trash pick-up. In West Lafayette, contact the street department, 705 South River Road, (765) 743.9606. In Lafayette, call the sanitation department, 260 South Third Street, (765) 742.2852. Outside the city limits, two companies haul trash, Liberty Disposal, Highway 43 and 1250 South, Brookston, (765) 563-3913, andWaste Management of Lafayette, 2120 Wabash Avenue, (765) 474.4432.

The Indiana Gas Company services all of Tippecanoe County. Most new applications can be completed over the telephone, 1-800-777-2060.

Electricity is provided by Cinergy/PSI and Tipmont REMC. Cinergy serves Lafayette, West Lafayette, and most small towns, while Tipmont primarily serves the rural areas and some small towns. The Cinergy number is (800) 521-2232.

Turning on the water in Lafayette requires a visit to the Lafayette Water Works office at City Hall, 20 North Sixth Street. The information number is 765-476-4488.

In West Lafayette, customers wanting to start or stop water service should contact Indiana American Water Company at 800-492-8373. They will collect all information and relay it to the Wastewater Billing Office.
