My partner and I went to Asahi for our weekly date night & I must say, we were pleasantly surprised! After reading the reviews here, I was a little skeptical, especially about the sushi ~ and that was even delicious (though the rolls were much smaller than normal). We both had the shrimp a filet mignon with fried rice - a little too many onions but all in all a really great meal!

The service was great too. The cook at our table was very funny and social, though I think we got the "good" one - the only other cook there seemed a little quite. Our waitress, not the most personable woman but she visited our table frequently and took good care of us.

Asahi is now at the top of my list of favorite restaurants here in Lafayette ~ unfortunately, that list is pretty short.

My boyfriend and I have been going to Asahi for years and we love it. The atmosphere is great. The food is reasonably priced. The waiters/waitresses are nice people, they just take some getting used to. As a huge sushi lover, I can tell you that theirs is good but Heisi/Nakama/Ah-Z/Naru in West Lafayette are better quality and more authentic. Kokoro in Lafayette is also amazing. I feel that Asahi's sushi is extremely Americanized, but it's still extremely tasty. Their dinners are also amazing.

The service was horrible. Our table didn't get our salad until the meal was out and did not get the soup until we asked for it. We ordered an appetizer, and while everyone else at our table got his or hers, we did not get ours until halfway through the meal. When the appetizer did arrive, it was so cold, mushy, and terrible tasting, we had to send it back (stay AWAY from the Sumai!). At the end of the meal, a woman came to clear our plates. She asked if I was finished, and I told her I was still eating. I turned to speak to my date, and the next thing I know, my plate is piled high with everyone else's dishes and she is clearing it away. As someone who has worked for years in the restaurant business, I know how stressful a busy night can be on a waitress, but I also know what service is absolutely unacceptable, and this was the worst I have ever seen (It's one thing to be busy and slow, it's another to be rude about it!). It ruined my Valentines dinner, and I will never go back.

Service is good. Atmosphere is kinda quirky, yet admirable. Sushi is excellent and price is quite reasonable.

My husband and I started going to Asahi even before we moved to Lafayette - and through the years the restaurant has gained quite a following!

The food is excellent, with the sushi being a stand out and a good value. The service keeps getting better and better, and the nights here are *packed* so be sure to get in early for some amazingly good food!

as the other reviewer said, it is comparable to Benihana's. Stop in for their amazing lunch specials (e.g. chicken teriyaki for $6 or the "asahi maki sushi special" for $10).

so, great food at a great price, but their service is lacking. With a high turnover rate for (non-related) employees, it seems a bit dysfunctional.

If you're looking for a restaurant similar to Benihana's, Asahi is the place. The building looks like it was an old Mexican restaurant, but the atmosphere inside is somewhat authentic.

The food is quite good at a more reasonable price than Benihana's. The service and cooks are normally pretty friendly and helpful. This is a good place to go on a Friday or Saturday, because they surpisingly don't ever seem to have much of a wait.
