My family made the mistake of visiting on Sunday evening 12/18 to celebrate a graduation from Purdue. Without a doubt it was the worst dining experince of my life. The service was horrid from the opening cocktail order that was botched to the announcement that there was no ranch dressing ( “we ran out” ) and no bread ( “it has been very busy” ). I wonder if the management was taken by surprise by Graduation Weekend ?

The food was even worse from grilled sea bass that was undercooked and soggy to a steak that was cold in the center…. and when the waitress took it back to finish grilling to medium rare she did not return it for almost 15 minutes- while the others in the party finished their dinner.

The portions were tiny and they come with virtually NO side items at all. Just a piece of fish ! Or just a piece of meat ! Considering how horrid the food was that might have been the only blessing.

I would have refused to pay the $170 bill except it would have upset my graduate who had not been there before but had made the reservations for the family. Such a sad ending to a glorious graduation day. I have many friends with children at Purdue and have begun warning them to never make the mistake I made, and never darken the doorstep of this pretend high priced “restaurant”.

Worst dining experience of my life–and I’m 58. Service was so slow. We watited two hours after placing our order to get our food. The food was mediocre. Dining area was freezing because the large overhead door was kept open even after we asked for it to be closed. Three members of our group had to leave before they got their food. The manager did not have time to talk to us because he was waiting on other tables and other customers who were also complaining. Even though we were completely disatisfied the manager would not take care of our entire bill–which was the only acceptable solution. Our evening and our daughter-in-law’s 30th birthday were completely ruined. We will never go back and will be sure to warn anyone who asks about where to eat in Lafayette.

The quality of the sushi was poor; dry rice, cold flat tempura, etc. Every sushi got too much sauce on it, and they did not taste like Japanese sushi at all. The fish portion was very tiny, and the cut was shabby and unprofessional. For the quality, the sushi is far overpriced.

They should know that taste is much more important than presentation. We were very, very disappointed and will never go back.

The first visit for dinner was a few months ago. It was great, service, food and atmosphere!
Tonight however was a different story. The steak I ordered was served with cold mashed potatoes with an over abundance of garlic! We had to wait for an hour and a half for all 6 of us to be served, two of the dishes the waitress returned before bringing to the table because they were burnt… Our waitress knew her stuff and was very nice… it is a shame that the food isn’t as well prepared as we experienced the first time! We really looked forward to a good meal but were disappointed…. we won’t be back anytime soon!

The food was of good quality. A bit pricey as second side cost extra. $5.00 for asparagus.

Also, you do not get to select your sushi what so ever they bring you a mix but it is all up to them. No miso or salad with sushi.

Service is terrible. Let me say it again, terrible. You will wait and wait and then wait again. It never improved, we really wanted to enjoy the experience but it was the worst service I have had in Lafayette.

Do not waste your time. There are far better places to visit.

went here the other day…and loved it…again…the sushi was wonderful and the service was great..it seemed like the server knew alot about the menu and could answer all our questions about the rolls…will definitly be returning!!!!

Will never eat there again. The service was awful.

Can’t beat the patio and sushi deals; however, the service needs to improve. Don’t be suprised if it takes 20 minutes before a server approaches your table.

  9. Maddy says:

This place is very nice and since they had the little patio is even better. Love the unlimited sushi. I wish they will have better wine list. Nice place to have a small party.

We (a party of four) went there on Sept 9. Food quality was ok, but not for the fee. The sever was horrible and appeared drunk. When we finished, wrong charges (double charge) were posted on different tickets. Unfortunately, one of the friends did not notice the over charge till later, and is still trying to sort out. Noteworthy is that most of double charges were beers or glass of wine – wonder if the server helped himself to the other drink?!

I had sushi at several east coast cities, like Boston, DC and Miami; comparable food would cost the half of what Bluefin charges. I’d save my appetite for raw fishes when visiting these places next time, but certainly not bluefin

I had a fabulous time at Blue Fin last evening. I was able to enjoy this expeirence with three of my friends and we a talking about making it a Tuesday night ritual. We all enjoyed the all you can eat sushi rolls and must say there was an excellent selection! Our server, Shellie, was amazing if she suggested it we ate it. she was on top of everything! I was very surprised the place wasn’t busier though. My suggestion to all…is if you love sushi or just thinking about trying it, Blue Fin Bistro is the place to go. Thank you for a wonderful expeirence!

I loved going to the unlimited sushi lunch, but they have stopped it for some reason. No reason when asked why, so I don’t go any more!

I am 55 years old and enjoy going to good restaurants. I went here on Sunday and have never been treated so rudely! I was told 3 times that I would be seated shortly. After waiting 30 minutes and the host having seated a couple who came in AFTER me, I left, NEVER to return! I went to another restaurant in town and within 5 minutes of arriving there, I saw a couple walk in to this place who had been seated at Bluefin shortly after I arrived. I spoke with them after my meal and they, too, had felt that the service was poor and disorganized.

I went to Bluefin Bistro tonight and will not return. When I entered, I noted that 1/2 of the restaurant was literally empty. The host told me that I would be seated shortly. The bar looked closed as there was no one at the bar (no bartender either) and there were trays of clean glasses sitting on several tables. There was a sitting area to the left where a couple were sitting. The host did not invite me to have a seat there or in the bar while I waited. He finally asked for whomever to follow him. He meant the couple sitting to the left but did not indicate that to me. He told me that the table was for them not me. I apologized and was told that I would be seated soon. A couple then came in and went into the bar and was served immediately with mixed drinks by someone, possibly the host. Another couple with a child came in and he asked them to have a seat in the area to the left. I still had not been offered a seat anywhere! A table emptied and the couple with the child were ushered to that table by the host while I still stood there. The entire length of this was about 20-30 minutes. After the table was given to couple who came in after me, I left and went to Toscana and had a COMPLETELY different experience! As a single person who frequently dines out alone, I have felt ignored at other restaurants in the past but NEVER have I been TOTALLY ignored! This was one of the rudest experience I have ever had and will not return and recommend the same to my acquaintances!

    P. S. The couple who was seated soon after I arrived entered Toscana about 5 minutes after I arrived. I went to them after my dinner to apologize again and was told that by the time they had left, no one had been to their table except to deliver glasses of water.

i went there and it was so delicious. You cant get a better deal anywhere else for the unlimited sushi rolls. the service was pleasant and the atmoshpere inviting. i will definitly be returning.

I ate “unlimited” sushi with my partner and a friend at BlueFin on Jan. 19, 2009 (MLK Day). I had eaten there once before and while the food was decent, the service was very lacking. On that occasion, the restaurant was not busy but the waitress seemed to avoid us after we had finished our first order of rolls. It took me asking her three times to finally recieve my coffee. This second occasion, while the food was better, the service was even worse. It took approximately 30 minutes to get our first order. The waitress seemed to avoid us again and when she eventually came over and took our second order, we waited over 45 minutes to get our order of three rolls! They had evidently run out of rice. Now I know the rice is vital for sushi and I would imagine because of this importance that a restaurant would make sure the supply was maintained. As a result of time constraints, our friend that ate with us had to leave before eating her fill. The restaurant was busy, but an establishment that is new and prides itself on being trendy should have a comparable level of service and customer satisfaction. We were there two hours; if we had been local businesspeople, that experience would absolutely keep us away. As it is, we will stay away anyway.

I’ve been to Bluefin twice now for their unlimited sushi lunch. The first time, the quality of the fish seemed low, but I decided to give them a second chance. I had the California roll and the Unagi roll, and both were delicious. However…it took almost three hours to eat lunch because of the slowness of the service. If it had been a normal workday for me instead of a holiday, I would have been forced to leave before getting a single bite of food. While we were there, our waitress failed to refill our drinks, did not take our orders promptly, and seemed rather distracted. The restaurant ran out of sushi rice, resulting in a nearly hour-long wait for the single roll I and my companion ordered for seconds. Very disappointing, especially as I enjoyed the food this time and would have wanted to keep going to Bluefin if the service was not so abysmal.

Came in from out of town and was going to another place, but ended up here to try it out. Nice atmosphere and the staff was pleasant. I found the food to be a bit high priced for what it was, but they seem to be trying to be more than what they are. The steak was good, but not great. The scallops were ok, nothing great again. Salad was very good along with the mixed veggies that were very fresh. The staff was ok, they seemed bored as there were not too many diners in the place. Overall I would probably give it one more try, but they need to step up the overall taste.

Went there for special dinner on December 29. We thought it was very fine. Great lighting, good service. Food was excellent, and I know fish.

We read a couple of negative reviews about the restaurant and were hesitant about making dinner reservations there for New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2008. However, we decided to judge the restaurant for ourselves. We were very pleased with the service and the food. Their wine list is extensive so we had a great wine to celebrate the evening. The stuffed mushroom appetizer was excellent and enough for two to share. The side salad was only lettuce and tomato but it didn’t need anything else because of the tasty house dressing. The size was just right, not overwhelming. My husband had the New York steak and I had the salmon. Both entrees were excellent, prepared perfectly and were served with sides of potatoes and vegetables that were stir-fried. We were glad we decided to patronize the restaurant and will return again.

This place is horrible!!!!! I will say the atmosphere is perhaps the only reason to go there. We took friends from out of town there and wow were we dissapointed. It took forever to get our food and when we got it we noticed that for the price there wasnt much-then we tasted it and we all 4 agreed it was not good at all. It tasted like something that you could get at Denny’s for 5.99 or less. Not at all what we expected. Each of us had gotten something different and none of us liked what we got-flavorless. Its not worth your money but if you wanted to go some where for drinks the atmosphere is fabulous.

Great place for sushi and steaks! The fish is fresh and the steaks almost melt in the mouth. The appetizer selection is excellent. The atmosphere is excellent for social or business settings.
