The Black Sparrow pub is snuggled in the heart of Downtown Lafayette on Main Street, between 2nd and 3rd Streets. Parking is only available on the street or in a nearby parking garage, but it’s a quick walk from the parking decks or from the pedestrian bridge from West Lafayette, and it’s less than a block from the Tippecanoe County Courthouse.

This establishment is 21 and over all the time, so plan to leave the kids at home.

If you’re staying at one of the Downtown area hotels, The Black Sparrow is literally just across the Wabash River via the pedestrian bridge from the Hilton Garden Inn in West Lafayette, and only a few quick blocks from the Holiday Inn City Center Select on 5th and South Streets in Lafayette.

My daughter and friends ate there recently and ordered an appetizer that apparently contained almonds that were either ground or in a paste and not visible to the human eye or listed on the menu. After eating one bite she felt a tingling in her throat and swelling in her lips. She asked the server if the dish contained nuts. He gave her an emphatic “no”. He didn’t even bother to check. Long, terrifying story shortened she went into anaphlylactic shock and spent the night in the hospital. Luckily she had an Epi pen with her or the results of an unexpected food allergy attack would have been horribly different. If you have food allergies you should consider eating elsewhere as they are not as concerned as they should be.

My wife and I accompanied our daughter, and her boyfriend (regulars), to this fine establishment, during our visit. It was for their Cinco de Mayo brunch, and, I have to say the chorizo biscuits and gravy were no less than amazing, comparable only to the outstanding red beer. The patrons were friendly and personable, the same for the staff. I’ve yet to experience the night life, but I anticipate great things during our next visit.

The food is over priced and the smoke is terrible bar side. One can really dig the artist atmosphere though some patrons appear rude or “I’m too hipster to treat others with respect” which at times seems like a vibe only suited for masochists. Of course bands bring their own crowds so timing is everything. If there is one spectacular thing I can say about the Black Sparrow it would be in regards to the capability of the bartenders “particularly the one I believe is called John,” to pull off any drink recipe. You’d have to drive a long way to find another bar that has put a parallel amount of time into learning the oldest and these more obscure recipes.

    The smoke really isn’t bad.

Love the bohemian atmosphere and some of their drinks. HATE the smoking!

  6. A must visit for anyone from out of town. A regular visit to anyone from around town. Be here soon! Great food, awesome beer selection and really incredible revolving cocktail menu. Plus, the DJs here are top notch. Try the Soul Stewards for a night of dancing and complete mayhem! Too cool.

Just made my first visit. Unique food menu. Cool Decor. Very knowledgable bartender and an unbelievable selection of draft beer. Not the Macro Brews and high end imports most places push. Excellent Craft Brews with many seasonals and High Hop content Ales. If you are looking for high quality Beers and Ales this is a must for you to check out.

Shmota: just so you are aware and you don’t sound like an idiot next time: they are called micro-brews, not macro-brews. they are also the exact same thing as a craft brew. It is hard to tell by your review if you are trying to say something good about them or something bad.

This food is real. Nothing out of a box. Even the pizza crust is homeade. How refreshing in the land of chain restaurants.

LOVE THIS PLACE! Cool vibe, great drinks, really good food! Try the hummus, goat cheese, or one of the pizza rusticas.
