I am extremely disappointed in their service. I am a vegetarian and I ordered “vegetarian fried rice w/o egg”, I repeated my order twice so that they know clearly. I was delivered chicken fried rice w/o egg. This is the second time this has happened, 1st time they got vegetarian fried rice with egg. I order carefully because I am allergic to Poultry and yet today, I had chicken mistaking it for tofu. I have called and complained. This is just to let you all know that the service is shitty and I will never recommend rice cafe, West Lafayette to anyone else. I strongly condemn the careless of the staff and the defiance of the manager who spoke to me.
For the money they charge, they’re perfectly reasonable. I mean they’re up til 4 AM. What else could a night-owl like me ask for ? I like their shrimp fried rice and shrimp lo mein. I never order stuff online since I prefer going in person and giving the order at the restaurant. So far, they haven’t taken more than 10 minutes to prepare it. That’s pretty reasonable. I’m don’t know how good their delivery service is, so can’t comment on that.
The bottomline is that it’s very reasonably priced and since its run by students for the students, customer service should not be THAT high a priority anyway. If it is for you , go to Red Lobster or Olive garden – NOT Rice cafe.
It was the most disgusting food I’ve ever ordered… It took over an hour to be delivered. The food was cold, and it tasted so bad! I didn’t even eat more than a bite! The manager is so rude and unprofessional! My boyfriend and I called, because it was so awful! The manager was really rude, and said he wouldn’t do anything about it! We told him we would drive there and return all the food! He said it did not matter, and that he wasn’t going to do anything to fix it! We will never go there again! Not only could we not stomach the food, but the GM was such a jerk! I wouldn’t give him another dime!!!
Don’t waste time here ,, very few dishes are good so far less choice plus they’re very impolite over the phone.
I agree their customer services is atrocious they made me the wrong dish and then would not give me a refund or make me the right dish. They said since I had eaten some of the wrong dish that they could not refund me. The are rude in person too.
NO WAY! I LOVE RICE CAFE. I HAVE ALWAYS HAD GOOD FOOD, AND GREAT DELIVERY SERVICE. THEY GET VERY VERY BUSY, BUT I’M NOT LOOKING FOR A VISITOR … I WANT MY FOOD AND IT IS ALWAYS GREAT! TRY THE EMPRESS SHRIMP … WOW, IT IS SOOOO GOOD!
Ordered for the first time tonight. The only good thing from our food order was the plastic containers that I can re-use. The food had ZERO flavor. There is no other way to describe it. The delivery guy made it in 35 minutes, which was nice, but we will NEVER EVER EVER order from this restaurant again. We will also make the effort to warn all of our friends, it was such a waste of money.
You will notice that all of the positive remarks were from 2009, there are none from 2010. Maybe the management or owner changed?
Bottom line— DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY AND TIME like we did.
I ordered from Rice Cafe last Friday and it was GREAT! Try to Empress Shrimp. It is so good. I am ordering the same tonight. Everything I have ordered has been delicious with good flavor. the Subgum Lo Mein is good. All the Lo Mein’s are good. Moo Shoo Pork is good. I am not sure what you are ordering that wasn’t good.
The delivery was good too. I gave a nice tip to show my appreciation. I will recommend this place to EVERYONE!
Do not go to this place to eat. The service is extremely bad, and the food there is terrible. I found hairs in the food more than once, so don’t just eat their food, check first! Something they delivered the wrong item and told u that it was your own mistake. I have been at Purdue for 4 years and finally I decided to give it one more try days ago but the experience is still terrible. So my advice again, “ DO NOT GO TO RICE CAFÉ.”
Cheap, easy, and relatively quick delivery (under 45 mins). That is the end of the positives.
Kung Pao chicken had literally zero taste or spice. Szechuan beef had some decent spice and taste, but quite oil-heavy. The orange chicken had no hint of orange, and it was almost like they forgot any type of sauce.
Rice cafe was recommended to us, glad we tried since it knocks a place off our eating list, but seriously, I could just find a mall foodcourt with better eats. This may work well for college kids with a case of the late night hunger pains, but not for us.
Best vegetarian food at Purdue!!! Try the mapo tofu or the veg lomein, you gotta ask for spicy tho… service is a little sketchy but they have to stay up until 4 so whatever… hot and sour soup is definitely a must.
Ok experiences so far this year. I’ve been a student at Purdue 4 years and this year was the first time I tried Rice Cafe. Service is just ok. When I told the guy on the phone I had a coupon he said “d*mn you” under his breath but I could hear him. They told me it would be 45 minutes and it took an hour and fifteen to get my order. Food is pretty ok, not amazing and kind of expensive for the quality.
We found this restaurant via this web site, never heard of it before and since we were tired of the regular place, we thought we would give this a try. We placed our order and waited 55 minutes to recieve HALF, of what we ordered. I called back, explained the problem told them what was missing from the original order, and they said it would be right out. 1 HOUR LATER, STILL NO FOOD! So I call and asked to speak to a manager. The guy didn’t give me his name and was rude to me and then just hung up on me. I called back and got a different guy. I asked to speak to a manager, he told me that he was the GM saying his name, after I asked for it, was “Uh Billy Hayward.” He told me that I should come and get it myself and then laughed at me and hung up the phone. I drove there, at 11:30PM, after the missing piece of my order finally showed up, found the real owner/manager, and was NOT HAPPY. He looked shocked that someone he employes treated a customer that way and refunded my money. THE FOOD IS NOT GOOD! IT IS GREASY, AND WITH THE EXCEPTION OF TWO DELIVERY DRIVERS AND A SOMEWHAT IRRIATATED OWNER, THE ENTIRE EXPERIENCE SUCKED!!!!!!!! DO NOT WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY HERE!
I really thought this place was awful. My friend and I split the Curry Chicken. There was more bone and cartiledge than there was chicken. Also, when I order something with curry I expect some heat and there really wasn’t any. Will never go to Rice Cafe again or recommend it to anyone.
Rice Cafe has the best Sesame Chicken EVER!!!! I have never been addicted to a specific dish the way I am to this one.
Awesome food! Brilliant Egg foo Young! The soy sauce over the foo young is additive to the core… Dude, stop drinking and start eating!
If you are a vegetarian the best food in Lafayette/West Lafayette is the General Tso’s Tofu at Rice Cafe. Its unbelievable.
John : for the money u are paying what do u expect.. if you are so good. go open a cafe with same price but better quality. LA PAN
Sheryl : <3 <3 You <3 <3 too
Linda : I am the best drunk food!
Honestly, I patronize Rice Cafe quite often. It’s a nice place, and it’s one of the few places open late night that isn’t fast food.
However, I think their food needs some reviewing. Their chicken’s always cooked till it’s a dried piece of rubber. Their beef is always cooked till it tastes like a shoe. And their pork…, don’t even get me started.
Also, your General Tso’s chicken, orange chicken, and all your other chicken (except steamed) is really just the same fried rubber with a different sauce over it. C’mon.
How about start hiring better chefs, or get one to teach your current staff to make better meat. Seriously. I make better meat at home, and I’m one of the worst cooks you’ll ever find in town.
The quantity of food is great (too much I’d say. I never finish), but the quality is just ass.
Not impressed. Crab Ragoons were not good, they are cheap knockoffs of the real thing, and the sweet and sour pork wasn’t very good either. I would suggest Lin’s Wok or China moon.
Schezuan Chicken or Beef Entre Sub Fried Rice 3 Egg rolls You’ll never eat another type of Chinese food again..
Rice Cafe is the best for late night eating. Amazingly good Chinese, late delivery, and the staff is really nice too. Everyone raves about the Crab Rangoon (as well they should) but the Steamed Dumplings are to die for!
Rice Cafe is awesome. Open really late, delivering really late, and really fantastic food. A little more expensive than some Chinese places, but the food is really high quality and the staff is super friendly. Our favorites are the General Tso’s and the Crab Rangoon. Highly recommended!!
OMG! I love rice cafe!!!! Its the best drunk food around. Me and my friends always go to rice cafe after a heavy night of drinking. I love the General Tso’s chicken. Take that China Dragon. All the othe chinnesse restaurants might as well pack up because Rice Cafe is here to stay.
I’m from Chicago and Rice Cafe is ok. The prices are a little on the high side. You can get the same dish, better quality for only $3.75 in China Town. The food very americanized but because it’s the only restaurant of its kind that’s close to campus I give it A+ for effort.
Best crab rangoon in the world!!!!!!!!
Best Chinese ever! Forget those buffets! Theres a ton of food no matter what you get here AND ITS CHEAP! General Tso’s, fried rice, crab rangoon. The perfect combo.
I love rice cafe. When ever we play Edward 40 Hands, we always order Rice Cafe after. I cant remember what I had yesterday from there, but I bet you that it was good.
Finally a Chinese restaurant that has native english-speakers on the phone. Rice Cafe uses college students as a buffer between the customer and the owners. This and many more things are what make this restaurant great.
A+++
<3 <3 Rice Cafe <3 <3
is amazing.
that’s all there is to it.
We love Rice Cafe! My friends and I go nearly every day because the food is so addictive. other asian cuisine restaurants don’t even nearly match in quality, and the prices are unbeatable for the amount of food you get. go now! you won’t regret it!
Rice Cafe is by far the best Chinese restaurant in West Lafayette and Lafayette combined. Fast, friendly service, combined with (seriously) the best Chinese cuisine I have ever eaten, makes for the perfect take-out or dine-in experience.
