FRANKFORT, Ind. — The Friends of the Frankfort Library will host an exhibition of art by the late Purdue Professor, Bob Reed. The exhibition, “Bob Reed – Not Prints” will open on Sunday, December 6 with a reception in the Anna and Harlan Hubbard Gallery from 1-5pm.

Reed, a professor of printmaking and drawing for nearly 30 years, was a prolific painter as well as a printmaker. Favorite subject matter included riverbanks, trees and rocks. The Wabash River and Lafayette landscapes did not escape Reed’s artistic field of vision. Although the style may vary from realistic to abstract to surreal, the works bear the marks of a dedicated artist exploring the nuances of the medium and the rugged beauty of the subject matter. Over 50 paintings will be on exhibit. Most will be for sale, including works in oils, acrylics, watercolor and gouache.

Scott Russell Sanders

In conjunction with the opening reception for Reed’s exhibition, Indiana author and recently retired Distinguished Professor of English from Indiana University, Scott Russell Sanders will present a reading from his latest title, “A Conservationist Manifesto” on Sunday, December 6 at 2pm in the Elizabeth O’Rear Skanta Theatre, Frankfort Library. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing after the reading.

“A Conservationist Manifesto” delves into the issues of consumerism and explores ways of moving from consuming to ways of conserving and preserving resources for future generations. Sanders speaks of how it is vital to recover a sense of place, and that genuine security begins with membership in a loving community able to meet basic needs with local resources. He examines specific problems, and then illuminates alternative choices which may lighten the burden on the earth. Sanders explains, “A Conservationist Manifesto envisions a path toward a materially simpler and spiritually richer way of life.”

There are no university rivalries evident in this pairing. Sanders’ words and Reed’s paintings fit together like two old friends. Reed’s deft handling of nature in the landscape makes visible Sanders’ meditations on the natural world in need of our care and protection.

The reception, reading, book signing and exhibition are free and open to the public.

Reed’s exhibit will remain on display through January 22, Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm; evenings and weekends by appointment. For further information call 765-654-8746 or visit http://fcpl.accs.net.

Exhibitions at the Frankfort Library are sponsored by the Friends of the Frankfort Library and made possible in part by the Tippecanoe Arts Federation, the Indiana Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and the Nancy N. Fullerton Fund for the Anna and Harlan Hubbard School of Living.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Earlier this year Ayn Rand’s prophetic novel Atlas Shrugged was selling at triple the rate it sold at in the beginning of 2008.

Now the novel is soaring to even greater heights, and its trade paperback edition is currently in first place in the Classics category on Amazon.com’s best-seller list for sales in the United States. The 50th anniversary mass-market paperback edition of Atlas Shrugged ranks as #2 and the trade paperback Centennial edition ranks as #3. For several weeks Atlas Shrugged has been holding steady in the top 10 best-sellers in the broader United States Literature and Fiction category, and as of the writing of this release, different editions of the novel stand at #3, #5 and #6 in Amazon’s ranking.

In a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed, Yaron Brook, executive director of the Ayn Rand Institute, explained the parallels between Atlas Shrugged and today’s events.

Atlas Shrugged tells the story of the US economy crumbling under the weight of government interventions and regulations.

“In Atlas Shrugged, Rand tells the story of the U.S. economy crumbling under the weight of crushing government interventions and regulations. Meanwhile, blaming greed and the free market, Washington responds with more controls that only deepen the crisis. Sound familiar?”

Brook also stressed the importance today of the book’s often overlooked message that capitalism cannot be properly defended without morally defending profit and self-interest: “…only an ethic of rational selfishness can justify the pursuit of profit that is the basis of capitalism — and that as long as self-interest is tainted by moral suspicion, the profit motive will continue to take the rap for every imaginable (or imagined) social ill and economic disaster. Just look how our present crisis has been attributed to the free market instead of government intervention — and how proposed solutions inevitably involve yet more government intervention to rein in the pursuit of self-interest.”

Those interested in understanding the morality of capitalism can learn more in Ayn Rand’s
The Virtue of Selfishness — which, at #12 in the Classics category, is setting records of its own.
