Purdue advises students to prepare for winter weather

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — As winter weather approaches, Purdue University is advising students to prepare.

“Many of our students come from areas with a much different climate, so we especially want to urge them to take steps now so they are prepared when winter arrives,” said L. Tony Hawkins, dean of students. Hawkins advises:

Wear several layers of lightweight, warm clothing.
Wear a hat to prevent body heat loss from your head. Scarves and hoods also help.
Use mittens that fit snugly at the wrists. Mittens are warmer than gloves because fingers maintain their warmth better when they are in contact with each other. Reduced surface area reduces heat loss.
Wear boots or shoes that provide good traction. Waterproof/resistant boots are also a good idea. Wet socks/feet lose heat much faster than dry socks/feet.
Take the Purdue tunnels and enclosed walkways.
Ride CityBus.

CityBus is free to everyone with a Purdue student, faculty or staff identification card. Bus stops are located all around campus, and buses run throughout Lafayette and West Lafayette.

The university considers many variables when making decisions about schedule changes due to weather, said Carol Shelby, senior director of environmental management and public safety. For example, in addition to temperature and wind chill, administrators consider the entire forecast for the day, snow cover, anticipated snowfall, icing, the conditions of roads and parking lots, and the ability to heat buildings and remove snow.

Consideration also is given to how far people need to walk outdoors, which is greater for students than for faculty and staff, most of whom park in lots and garages near the campus.

Taste of Tippecanoe closes roads, detours buses in Downtown Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The annual “Taste of Tippecanoe” will cause road closures and significant detours in the Downtown Lafayette area on Saturday, June 20th and Sunday, June 21st. To help bus riders plan around the Taste festivities, CityBus has announced route and schedule changes for the weekend.

The Taste of Tippecanoe is a one day, multi-stage festival that draws more than 50,000 people and features a smorgasbord of local restaurants, live music, and ends with a spectacular fireworks show for kids of all ages.

ROAD CLOSURES: The corner of Third and Ferry streets will be closed to all traffic, including buses. The CityBus customer service office in Riehle Plaza will be closed on Saturday after 4PM.

TRANSFER CENTER: Buses will hold on Third St. between North and Cincinnati. 1B, 3B, 4B, and 4A will hold between North & Brown, 1A, 2A, 2B, 3A, 6A, 6B, 7 will hold between Cincinnati & North.

TROLLEY: Right on 4th, right on Ferry, right on 5th, right on Columbia, resume route at 2nd. (Note: While Farmer’s market is in effect, until about noon, trolley will need to use 6th instead of 5th). In West Lafayette, trolley will use State St. going east and west bound instead of Tapawingo and Brown. Brown St. will be bypassed.

1A MARKET SQUARE: Bus will depart to North St. as regular route. Evening outbound bus will turn right on 5th, left on Ferry. Inbound bus will turn right on 4th at Brown, left on Cincinnati, left on 3rd.

1B SALISBURY: The outbound bus will turn left on North, right on 5th (6th while Farmer’s Market in effect), right on Columbia, resume route at 2nd. Inbound bus will turn left on River Rd. from State St., right on the ramp to the Harrison Bridge, cross river, exit right on Third St.

2A SCHUYLER: Bus will depart North St. to right on 5th, left on Ferry St., resume route. Inbound bus will turn left on Cincinnati from 4th.

2B UNION: Bus will depart North St. to left on 6th.

3A LAFAYETTE SQUARE: Outbound bus will turn left on North, right on 5th (6th while Farmer’s Market open), left on South. Inbound bus will turn left on Cincinnati from 4th.

3B NORTHWESTERN: Outbound bus will turn left on North, right on 5th (6th while Farmer’s market open), right on Columbia, and will resume route at 2nd St. Inbound bus will turn left on River Rd. from State St., right on the ramp to the Harrison Bridge, cross river, exit right on Third St.

4A TIPPECANOE MALL: Outbound bus will turn left on North, right on 5th (6th while Farmer’s Market open), left on South. Inbound bus will turn left on Cincinnati from 4th.

4B PURDUE WEST: The outbound bus will turn left on North, right on 5th (6th while Farmer’s Market operating), right on Columbia, resume route at 2nd.

6A FOURTH ST.: Outbound bus will turn left on North, right on 5th (6th while Farmer’s Market open), right on Columbia, left on 2nd. Inbound bus will turn left on Cincinnati from 4th.

6B S. 18TH ST: Outbound bus will turn left on North, right on 5th (6th while Farmer’s Market open), left on South. Inbound bus will turn left on Cincinnati from 4th.

7 STATE ROAD: Outbound bus will turn left on North, right on 5th, left on Ferry. Inbound bus will turn left on Cincinnati from 4th.

CityBus extends Happy Hollow route to Prophets Ridge

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — CityBus will extend service in West Lafayette to the Prophets Ridge subdivision beginning Monday, February 2nd.

CityBus General Manager Martin Sennett said Route 5 (Happy Hollow) will provide limited service to the neighborhood near 500 N. and 75 E. in West Lafayette. The bus will serve the neighborhood on four trips in the morning and afternoon. Buses will stop there at 6:15AM, 6:45AM, 7:15AM, and 7:45AM, and at 4:45PM, 5:15PM, 5:45PM, and 6:15PM.

CityBus will extend the Happy Hollow 5 route to serve the Prophets Ridge subdivision in northern West Lafayette on Febraury 2, 2009

Other areas served by the route include Kalberer Rd., Cumberland Ave., Soldiers Home Rd., Happy Hollow Rd., N. River Rd., and the Purdue campus. The ride time between campus and Prophets Ridge is 27 minutes.

Sennett said the change includes discontinuing service along portions of the route that are served by other bus routes. “Making the route more efficient is what allows us to extend it further north,” Sennett said. Route 5 will no longer serve S. Grant St., Wood, Chauncey, Salisbury, or Barlow in West Lafayette. Service on Chippewa and Navajo will be provided only when requested by riders.

Another advantage is a faster return trip for residents along Soldiers Home Rd., said Sennett. “Currently many of the riders exit the bus at Chippewa and walk across the bridge over U.S. 52. These riders will find the new route more convenient.”

CityBus to host “Office Hours” at Purdue, Dec 15

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — CityBus will host “Office Hours” on the Purdue West Lafayette campus to discuss the bus sytem with customers. Purdue students, faculty, staff, and all other CityBus riders are invited to share your ideas, make suggestions, or ask questions of CityBus managers.

During the event, CityBus will also host public meetings to discuss possible changes to route 5 Happy Hollow.

The proposed changes include:

The addition of a direct return trip for residents along Soldiers Home Rd.
Service along Salisbury & Barlow will be discontinued.
Service along S. Grant and Wood St. will be discontinued.
Service along Catherwood will be discontinued.
Weekday reduction in service of 1 hour 22 minutes.

Route 5 riders will have the chance to review the changes and share comments.

Office Hours With CityBus will take place on Monday, December 15, from 10:00a to 6:30p, in room 206 of Stewart Center. Public meetings regarding the possible changes to route 5 will take place in the same location at 10:00a, 2:00p and 5:30p.

CityBus announces Thanksgiving service changes, 3A detour expires

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — CityBus will not operate on Thursday, November 27 due to the Thanksgiving
holiday. Additionally, the Purdue Campus Loop routes will not operate from 6:00p Tuesday, November
25, through the weekend, including evening and night buses. Campus Loop service resumes on Monday, December 1.

3A Lafayette Square detour expires Sunday, November 23. Regular route service resumes Monday, November 24.

Regular route and trolley riders should be aware that when Purdue classes are not held, as will be the case on Wednesday, November 26 and Friday, November 28, the following changes occur:

Route 4B Purdue West/Downtown detours through Purdue Village when inbound. There is no inbound service on State St. between Airport Rd. and S. Martin Jischke Dr.
5 Happy Hollow service is reduced to one bus operating on a 60 minute frequency from 9:30AM to 4:00PM.
Route 8 Klondike Express does not operate on days when classes are not held.
The Wabash Trolley Line follows the Black Line route. S. River
Rd., Williams, and S. Grant will not be served.

Route 3A Lafayette Square Detour Expires

The detour on route 3A Lafayette Square, which has been in effect for several months, will expire on Monday morning, November 24. The bus route has been detouring due to the closure of State St. and Earl Ave. These streets are now open.

CityBus will continue operating the detour through Sunday, November 23 in order to allow time for passengers to become aware of the change.

Beginning on Monday, November 24, the bus will follow its regular route. The outbound bus will follow State St., 26th St., and Teal Rd. to 18th St. The inbound bus will follow Teal Rd., 22nd St., and State
St. to 18th St.

CityBus detour to affect route 3A Lafayette Square

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — CityBus announced today that the intersection of State Street and 22nd Street at Earl Avenue in Lafayette will close due to construction beginning Tuesday, September 9, for approximately three months.

3A Lafayette Square buses will not be able to serve State St., 26th, 22nd, or Teal Rd. (between 26th and 18th streets). Both inbound and outbound 3A buses will remain on 18th St. for the duration of the
construction project, serving 18th St. between Main St. and Shoshone.

All passengers usually boarding along State, 26th, 22nd, or Teal Rd. east of 18th St. will need to walk to 18th St. to board the 3A buses.

Jeff H.S. and Tecumseh students who currently board the inbound 3A along 22nd St. will need to board at the bus stop at Hiatt and 18th St.

CityBus rides free and easy with Purdue ID

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Owning a Purdue ID card means a free ride on CityBus — good news for many Purdue students, faculty and staff members who want to save the costs of driving to and parking at the West Lafayette campus.

Purdue ID cards equal free rides anywhere CityBus goes in Lafayette-West Lafayette.

CityBus and Purdue have a contracted partnership in which Purdue students, faculty and staff have unlimited, fare-free access to the CityBus system. The access is not just on campus routes but on any CityBus route.

Ridership, which has increased steadily over the past several years, is increasing more rapidly this year thanks to higher prices for gas and many other goods and services.

“Ridership was up nearly 17 percent for the month of June and is up more than 9 percent so far for 2008,” says John Metzinger, manager of development for CityBus of Greater Lafayette. Metzinger says CityBus provided more than 2.5 million rides this year through the end of June.

Larry Farr, a clerk at the University News Service, says he has been a bus rider for years.

“I’ve used public transportation all my life,” Farr says. “I use it now mainly because Purdue pays for it. I wonder why more people don’t use it.”

Farr says it takes him about 40 minutes to get to work, including walk time to the bus stop a block from his house and to ENAD from his drop-off spot on campus. And it takes him about 30 minutes to get home.

“I have driven in to work on occasion and after finding a spot to park and walking, it takes me about the same amount of time,” he says. “Riding the bus is just simpler, saves on gas and aggravation. And I usually read a book both ways.”

Deborah Klinger, a secretary in foods and nutrition, began riding the bus this year when service was extended to near her home. She had never ridden a bus before but after giving it a try, she’s convinced it’s a great way to travel.

“I live off 350 South in Lafayette and was thrilled when I learned that they were going to extend the routes to our location,” Klinger says. “I started riding in January when the route opened and have ridden every day I can since.

“It is just wonderful to be ‘chauffeured’ from the Wal-Mart Plaza on 350 South to right in front of my building. The drivers are friendly and very helpful, it saves me in gas money, I don’t have to experience the stress of driving in bad weather, I don’t have to find parking, and I have made friends with a whole new group of people who work here at Purdue and in the West Lafayette area. It has been nothing but a positive experience.”

According to CityBus figures for 2007, faculty and staff ridership averaged more than 11,600 rides per month with a high of 12,282 rides in October.

Metzinger says CityBus drivers are noticing more faculty, staff and students taking the bus this year.

“With gas prices the way they are, we want to make sure faculty and staff know that they only need to show their Purdue ID to ride the bus for free,” he says.

CityBus considering changes to Happy Hollow route; seeks input, comments from public

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — CityBus officials are considering changes to a bus route and are asking for help from riders and the public. Public meetings are scheduled to discuss proposed changes to route “5 Happy Hollow,” which serves University Farm, Bar Barry Heights, Soldiers Home Rd., Happy Hollow Rd., River Rd. and the Purdue campus.

“We are proposing the changes in response to customer comments, and to improve performance efficiencies,” said John Metzinger, Manager of Development. The proposal provides a more direct return trip to the Soldiers Home Rd. area while bypassing areas served by other bus routes.

Route changes are expected to have the following results:

Better service for residents along Soldiers Home Rd. by providing a direct return trip.
Service along Salisbury & Barlow will be discontinued.
Service along S. Grant and Wood St. will be discontinued.
Service along Catherwood will be discontinued.
Weekday reduction in service of 1 hour 22 minutes.

Public meetings are scheduled for Monday, July 21st at 2:00PM and 5:00PM. Both meetings will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 211 Knox Dr., West Lafayette, in Gathering Room 3. This location is served by the Happy Hollow bus.

CityBus operates a fleet of 73, including four hybrid buses. It logged nearly 4.7 million passenger trips in 2007, including more than 340,000 on the free downtown/Purdue trolley.

CityBus Downtown Transfer Center to be closed July 18, 19

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — CityBus announces that the Riehle Plaza Downtown Transfer Center will be closed Friday evening, July 18, through Sunday, July 20th. CityBus’s customer service office will be closed during this time. The city is replacing carpet inside the facility.

On Saturday, July 19, Riehle Plaza will be closed due to “Dancing in the Streets.” Buses will meet for transfers on Third St. between Ferry and Cincinnati streets.

CityBus announces two new detours effective Monday, June 23

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — CityBus announced two new detours this morning (Friday, June 20) affecting the 3A Lafayette Square route and the 4B Purdue West routes. Both detours will be in effect as of Monday, June 23rd and last through the end of the summer.

3A Lafayette Square Detouring at 22nd Street

Beginning Monday June 23 and lasting for the rest of summer, 22nd St. in Lafayette will be closed from Teal Rd. to Hiatt. The inbound 3A Lafayette Square bus will detour using Teal Rd. to left on 26th St., and the route will resume at Earl Ave. Buses will not be able to provide service along the east side of Jefferson High School and Tecumseh Middle School. Riders in these locations should board the bus at 26th St. or at the corner of State St. and Earl Ave.

4B Purdue West Detouring in Purdue Village

The inbound 4B Purdue West/Klondike bus is detouring around a closed street in Purdue Village. The bus will follow Nimitz to right on Halsey, right on Airport Rd., right on State St., resuming the route at S. Martin Jischke. Nimitz will not be served from Halsey to Jischke, and Jischke will not be served from Nimitz to State St. This detour will be in effect beginning June 23rd for the rest of the summer.
