WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Work began this week (April 6) on a new phase of the $99.5 million Mackey Arena Complex project at Purdue University.

The work, which includes moving the F parking lot north of its current location, requires the removal of some trees. The work also involves construction of two new football practice fields and a new parking lot.

The renovation of the 42-year-old arena and surrounding area will include an expanded concourse and other fan amenities in Mackey and a three-level Student-Athlete Development Center for sports medicine, strength and weight training, and basketball practice.

Trees are being removed along Northwestern Avenue as part of the F lot relocation. Their removal was necessary because they obstructed the view at the new exit on Northwestern Avenue.

The 65 trees that will be removed will be replaced with 150-200 new trees, said Donald Staley, senior landscape architect in the Office of the University Architect. He said 161 trees – 72 percent of those on the renovation site – will remain. Staley noted that the new parking lot will have an innovative landscape treatment that includes more trees and a state-of-the-art storm water system that will keep most of the water in the ground rather than sending it to the sewer.

The renovation of the 42-year-old arena and surrounding area will include an expanded concourse and other fan amenities in Mackey and a three-level Student-Athlete Development Center for sports medicine, strength and weight training, and basketball practice.

The project will take three years, said Steve Simmerman, assistant athletics director for facilities. Most of the work will be done from April 1 to Nov. 1 each year when basketball teams are not in their playing and practice seasons.

Due to construction in the area, traffic has been realigned and lanes have been narrowed along Harrison Street.

The Police Department has noticed an increase in the number of vehicles ignoring the stop signs and traffic control devices in that area, increasing the chances for a serious accident. To help with safety, the police will be aggressively patrolling the area throughout the coming weeks.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue has issued a list of the facilities projects whose scope or location can cause disruptions for many people on the West Lafayette campus.

Wood Street Garage is closed for repairs through Aug. 3. The cleaning schedule for all parking garages will begin June 1 with the upper three levels of the Grant Street Garage.

Harrison Street west of South Russell Drive will have disruptions and construction traffic as work continues on Hockmeyer Hall of Structural Biology and begins on Discovery Learning Center, one on each side of Martin Jischke Drive.

South Russell Drive just south of State Street has restrictions and closures while a tunnel top removal project is going on.

South Russell Drive south of Harrison Street may close soon for reconstruction (time had not been determined). During the closure, to reach campus buildings south of the railroad tracks, go on South River Road to Ahlers Road. A map of the area is at www.purdue.edu/physicalfacilities/travel/pdf/S.Russell_RR.pdf.

First Street from Windsor Halls to MacArthur Drive will continue to have disruptions for several projects through summer and beyond.

Stadium Avenue is to be closed just west of David Ross Road for replacement of a small bridge that is part of Stadium Avenue.

Starting May 26, the west lane of University Street between Third and Fourth streets (by Lawson Computer Science Building) will be closed for replacement of three boulevard pole lights.

A number of projects involving street paving, sidewalk improvement and brickwork are scheduled. Several of the street projects are around Cary Quadrangle. Another is on Martin Jischke Drive between State Street and Third Street.

For a more complete look at campus disruptions related to construction and repair, see the map at www.purdue.edu/physicalfacilities/campusconstruction/index.php.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Several construction projects will cause vehicular and pedestrian traffic disruptions this summer on the West Lafayette campus of Purdue University. This list (with links to maps) from Physical Facilities includes the major construction disruptions, which will begin on or after Monday, May 12. Travelers are asked to be alert and to be patient as staff and contractors work to complete the projects before the start of the fall semester.

South Russell Drive will be closed for reconstruction between Harrison Street and the KB&S railroad tracks to the south. Construction traffic, customers, and staff are asked to use Ahlers Road from S. River Road for access to campus buildings south of the railroad tracks. A map of the area is available here: www.purdue.edu/physicalfacilities/travel/pdf/S.Russell_RR.pdf

First Street between Martin Jischke Drive and Russell Drive will be closed until August 2009 for the Duhme Hall remodel project. The Windsor Woods parking loop will not be available for thru traffic. A map of the area is available here: www.purdue.edu/physicalfacilities/travel/pdf/Dumhe_Hall.pdf

First Street, from McArthur Drive to the west entrance of the parking lot at Fowler House, will close for utility work until July 2009 for the new student housing project. A map of the area is available here: www.purdue.edu/physicalfacilities/travel/pdf/RSH.pdf

Traffic will be realigned along Harrison Street from Jischke Drive to Russell Drive for the start of the Harrison Street high voltage duct bank project. During construction additional streets will close for periods of time. These areas include:

Harrison Street crossing at Transportation.

Jischke Drive just north of Harrison Street.

Nimitz Dr. between Jischke Dr. and Gates Drive.

Gates Drive south of Nimitz Drive to the Discovery Parking lot.

Arnold Drive south of Nimitz Drive

A map of the area is available here: www.purdue.edu/physicalfacilities/travel/pdf/Harrison_St._High_Voltage.pdf

A tunnel top replacement project will take place immediately south of State Street on S. Russell Drive. The closure is from State Street to just before the entrance into the Lilly parking lot on the east side of the S. Russell and the entrance into the Poultry building parking lot. Both parking lots will be available from the south side of the closure. A map of the area is available here: www.purdue.edu/physicalfacilities/travel/pdf/Tunnel_Top_S.Russell.pdf

In addition, the Indiana Department of Transportation plans to repave various locations on campus from May 12 through June 30. Locations include:

North University Street from Stadium Ave. to Tower Drive.

Ade Drive starting at Tower Drive.

Tower Drive from University Street to N. Intramural Drive.

N. Intramural Drive from Indiana 26 to 3rd Street.
