			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &#8212; Dozens of substance-free activities will be offered through April 26 for Purdue students as part of the annual Grand Prix celebration.</p>
<p>Many campus organizations, offices and departments will be taking part in this year&#8217;s Grand Alternative, which will feature a wide range of events, including games, concerts, movies, sports events, fundraisers, parties and dances.</p>
<p>The 2009 Grand Alternative is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students, Wesley Foundation, Student Wellness Office and the Division of Recreational Sports, along with a grant from the Drug-Free Coalition of Tippecanoe County.</p>
<p>The Grand Alternative was conceived in 1998 when Steve Cain, a campus minister at the Wesley Foundation, initiated a communitywide coalition of student groups with the goal of celebrating the Grand Prix safely and without alcohol. Grand Alternative got its official start in 1999 with a grant from the Coalition for a Safe and Drug-Free Tippecanoe County.</p>
<p><strong>All Grand Alternative events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.</strong> The following is an up-to-date and complete list of activities and sponsors.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &#8212; Purdue student organizations and campus offices are eligible to apply for grants in order to sponsor substance-free events and activities during this year&#8217;s Grand Alternative, which will take place April 19-26, 2009.</p>
<p>The Drug-Free Coalition of Tippecanoe County has awarded $5,483.50 to the Office of the Dean of Students for mini-grants to help offset the costs for organizations hosting substance-free events during the annual event, said Carol E. Ben-Davies, assistant dean of students.</p>
<p>The Grand Alternative was conceived in 1998 when Steve Cain, a campus minister at the Wesley Foundation, initiated a communitywide coalition of student groups with the goal of celebrating the Grand Prix safely and without alcohol. Grand Alternative got its official start in 1999 with a grant from the Coalition for a Safe and Drug-Free Tippecanoe County.</p>
<p>The Grand Alternative is a collaboration between the Office of the Dean of Students, Student Wellness Office, Division of Recreational Sports and the Wesley Foundation.</p>
<p>All recognized student organizations in good standing are invited to apply for the mini-grants.</p>
<p>There will be two informational meetings to explain the application process. A representative of any interested organization must attend one of the sessions. The first will be offered at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 21) in Stewart Center, Room 314, and the second will be offered at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 22) in Stewart Center, Room 320.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &#8212; Five Lafayette-West Lafayette area bands will face off Friday (April 18) in the Battle of the Bands sponsored by the Purdue Student Union Board.</p>
<p>The competition, which has been held since 1999, will take place from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Recreational Sports Center on Purdue&#8217;s West Lafayette campus. <strong>Battle of the Bands is free and open to the public.</strong></p>
<p>The event will feature The Fastest Kid Alive, Project Hero, The Educated Guess, GWAP Team and Debris. All of the bands have at least one Purdue student member.</p>
<p>Special guest performers Oh Discretion! will kick off the show. Tara Madison and Jake from the Z96.5 Morning Zoo will serve as the emcees for the evening.</p>
<p>During the Battle of the Bands, a panel of judges will judge the bands on overall impression, cohesiveness, originality, stage presence and quality of sound. First prize is $250, second prize is $150 and third prize is $100.</p>
<p>The battle is part of this year&#8217;s Grand Alternative, a week of substance-free activities leading up to the annual Grand Prix celebration.<br />

<p>Many campus organizations, offices and departments will be taking part in this year&#8217;s Grand Alternative, which will feature a wide range of events, including games, concerts, movies, sports events, fund raisers, parties and dances.</p>
<p>The 2008 Grand Alternative is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students, the Wesley Foundation, the Student Wellness Office and the Division of Recreational Sports, along with a grant from the Coalition for a Safe and Drug-Free Tippecanoe County.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. &#8212; Dozens of substance-free activities will be offered through April 20 for Purdue students as part of the annual Grand Prix celebration.</p>
<p>Many campus organizations, offices and departments will be taking part in this year&#8217;s Grand Alternative, which will feature a wide range of events, including games, concerts, movies, sports events, fund raisers, parties and dances.</p>
<p>The 2008 Grand Alternative is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students, the Wesley Foundation, the Student Wellness Office and the Division of Recreational Sports, along with a grant from the Coalition for a Safe and Drug-Free Tippecanoe County.</p>
<p>The Grand Alternative was conceived in 1998 when Steve Cain, a campus minister at the Wesley Foundation, initiated a community wide coalition of student groups with the goal of celebrating the Grand Prix safely and without alcohol. Grand Alternative got its official start in 1999 with a grant from the Coalition for a Safe and Drug-Free Tippecanoe County.</p>
<p>All Grand Alternative events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. The following is a complete list of activities and sponsors:</p>
<p><span id="more-1050"></span>- Tuesday (April 15). 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Purdue Memorial Mall. <strong>Greek Style Cookout</strong>. Sponsored by the Hellenic Student Association. Cost is $2.</p>
<p>- Tuesday (April 15). 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Varsity Softball Complex. <strong>Purdue women&#8217;s softball vs. Valparaiso.</strong> Cost is $2.</p>
<p>- Wednesday (April 16). 1-9 p.m. Purdue Hillel Foundation, 912 W. State St., West Lafayette. <strong>Israel @ 60 Celebration.</strong> Sponsored by the Purdue Hillel Foundation.</p>
