Exercise program for expecting and new mothers begins begin June 10


LAFAYETTE, Ind. — “Motion for Moms” – a light exercise and fitness program for expecting moms, as well as for moms who have recently delivered – is set to start at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10 through Thursday, July 17.

Motion for Moms is sponsored by St. Elizabeth Regional Health’s Physical Therapy Department.

Featured activities include traditional strengthening, resistive stretching and endurance exercises including yoga and Pilates to prepare the new mom for her childbirth experience and for caring for her newborn. An educational component will be a part of each section. Topics that will be covered will include nutrition, pain management during pregnancy, postpartum recovery, relaxation techniques, posture, foot care and safety information.

“Motion for Moms provides a fun, supportive environment for exercising moms before and after delivery,” said Dusti Chase, MS, PT, a physical therapist who is leading the program. “These exercise classes are specifically designed for women at any stage of pregnancy. The class is also a chance for expectant moms and new moms to network and meet other people.”

This session of Motion for Moms is set for 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning on Tuesday, June 10 and going through Thursday, July 17. Cost is $40 for the 12 sessions. Medical clearance from your doctor is required prior to participation. A release form can be obtained by calling the Kathryn Weil Center for Education at (765) 449-5133.

Classes will be held at the Kathryn Weil Center for Education, which is located in the Medical Arts Building, located at 415 N. 26th St., Suite 400 in Lafayette on the Home Hospital campus.

Kathryn Weil Center for Education and Spirit of Women celebrate spring by encouraging women to ‘Get Smarter, Get Stronger’


WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Kathryn Weil Center for Education will present “Get Smarter, Get Stronger” at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 9 at the Kathryn Weil Center for Education, 415 N. 26th St., Suite 400.

“Get Smarter, Get Stronger” includes several presentations and free demonstrations designed to make the evening both fun and educational. The following events are currently scheduled:

  • “Building Your Brain Power at Any Age” by Shadi Resheidat, M.D., a family practitioner specializing in geriatric medicine with Unity Healthcare. Dr. Resheidat will address ways to keep your brain active and healthy. Signs and symptoms of a stroke will also be addressed to increase your stroke awareness.

  • Various activities offered at the Tippecanoe County Public Library, such as Murder by the Book, and eclectic and fiction book clubs.
  • “Strength, Balance and Flexibility: A Recipe for Staying Strong Regardless of Your Age,” by Julie Rasner, certified yoga teacher and Reiki master. Participants will learn the “yogic breath” so that you can breathe through life feeling revitalized, less stressed and in control of your mind.

The Kathryn Weil Center for Education and St. Elizabeth Regional Health are members of the Spirit of Women, a national coalition of hospitals and health care providers that pledge to provide the highest standards of excellence in women’s health, education and community outreach.

Neonatal Resuscitation Program Recertification Course Feb. 4


LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Kathryn Weil Center for Education will provide neonatal resuscitation certification and recertification programs in 2008. This course is designed to teach an evidence-based approach to resuscitation of the newborn.

The recertification course will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 4. Additional recertification courses will be offered on May 5, Aug. 4 and Nov. 3. Certification courses will be offered on April 7, July 7 and Oct. 6.

The fee is $75 per person. Lunch is on your own. Class size is limited. All classes will be held in the Medical Staff Conference Room, located in the lower level of Home Hospital.

To register, call the Kathryn Weil Center for Education at (765) 449-5133. Books may be picked up after the preceding NRP class, or at least one week prior to taking the class from the Kathryn Weil Center for Education. The center is located in the Medical Arts Building, 415 N. 26th St., Suite 400 on the campus of Home Hospital.
