Enrollment hits all-time high for Purdue College of Technology at Lafayette

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A record number of students have enrolled in classes the past two semesters at the Purdue University College of Technology’s location at Lafayette, officials have reported.

Jon Aull, location director for the College of Technology at Indianapolis and Lafayette, said enrollments reached all-time highs in both the fall 2007 and spring 2008 semesters. In the fall, 268 students were enrolled, up 23 percent from fall 2006. This spring, 210 students were enrolled, up 14 percent from spring 2007.

Michele Summers, assistant director of the Lafayette location, said the increase in enrollment is due to increased marketing efforts in addition to strong partnerships with local employers.

“We are open to all students but are focused primarily on nontraditional students who are working but want to further their education,” she said. “We offer classes at night and at their workplaces, so we are making every effort to meet the needs of the people of Lafayette.”

The College of Technology at Lafayette is located at the Subaru of Indiana Automotive facility on Indiana 38 and also offers classes at Wabash National Corp., Fairfield Manufacturing Co. Inc., Caterpillar Inc. and in Frankfort.

The Lafayette location offers certificate programs, associate degrees and bachelor’s degrees in industrial technology and organizational leadership and supervision.

Tippecanoe Arts Federation, City of Lafayette to put mural over graffiti

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Tippecanoe Arts Federation and various volunteer artists in collaboration with the City of Lafayette are working on a Mural Art Project.

In December 2007 the City of Lafayette approved a proposal submitted by artist and TAF Business Manager, David Raymer, to produce a mural on city owned property which has experienced a high concentration of “graffiti tagging”.

The project involves direct art education of Cary Home Youth who will help produce the artwork on the mural with other volunteers. The site location is the wall under the Twikingham overpass along the City of Lafayette Parks Department’s walking trail between South 9th and 18th Streets. Because of the specifics of the surface at the site, the Mural Project will be composed of multiple themes in various monochromatic colors.

Sponsors of the project are Purdue Employee Federal Credit Union and ICI/Glidden Paints-MarJean Village.

The artists and youth volunteers will be at the site this Thursday, May 1st beginning at 4:15pm painting the base primer on the surface.

Interested individuals who wish to volunteer may contact Mr. Raymer at Tippecanoe Arts Federation, 423-2787 or by e-mail draymer@tippecanoearts.org

Police beefing up presence for Purdue Grand Prix weekend

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University police are gearing up for the big weekend on campus by providing extra officers at different events throughout the week.

The Purdue Grand Prix and the Purdue Black & Gold spring football game are scheduled for Saturday (April 19), and events such as a concert on Wednesday (April 16) and a concert/carnival on Friday (April 18) also are taking place.

Additional Purdue police officers will be on duty at several different Grand Prix-related events. West Lafayette and Indiana State excise police will work in cooperation with Purdue’s department over the weekend, said Purdue police Capt. John Cox.

“It will be an exciting weekend at Purdue, and we want those who are on campus to have fun. But we want them to do so responsibly, safely and without creating problems for those around them,” Cox said. “The weather forecast is for a nice weekend, so we expect a large number of people on campus. We want to help provide for a safe and enjoyable atmosphere.”

Cox said excise police will focus on all areas where underage drinking might be taking place.

Purdue’s police will have security at many campus events, said Purdue police Lt. Kevin Booker.

“Our main concern is safety,” he said. “We’ll have some activities going on at the same time on Saturday, and we will have a presence at those events.”

This year’s 51st annual Purdue Grand Prix, a 160-lap kart race featuring 33 Purdue student drivers, is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday (April 19) on the track north of Ross-Ade Stadium. Pits open to the public from 9-10 a.m., and track seating opens at 10 a.m. Practice is from 10:10-11 a.m., and heat races start at 11:20 a.m. leading up to the main race.

Purdue’s Black & Gold spring football game starts at noon Saturday and is preceded by the Family Fun Fest from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Ross-Ade Stadium.

Last year, police agencies working in cooperation, made a total of 142 arrests during Grand Prix weekend.
