WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Perseverance paid off for senior Travis Iles as he raced to the winner’s circle in Saturday’s (April 25) 52nd running of the Purdue University Grand Prix.

Iles, an industrial management major from Mt. Vernon, Ill., moved into third by the 14th lap, worked his way into the lead by lap 40 and held on for the remainder of the 160-lap race. This is Iles’ fourth Grand Prix and his first win.

Senior Travis Iles celebrates his first Grand Prix win.

“It feels fantastic,” he said after the race. “It’s like a big weight’s been lifted off my shoulders. This is something I’ve been wanting really bad since I was probably 6 years old.”

Iles attributed his victory to hard work and conservative driving on the track.

“My dad used to tell me when I was younger, ‘Don’t be dumb, be smart.’ So I took a Sharpie and wrote on my roll cage, ‘Be smart.’ I kept looking at that and remembered that.

“There’s no chance to recover in something like this. You’ve just got to stay out of trouble, and that’s what I tried to do.”

Sean Noonan, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering from Perrineville, N.J., came in second.

“It’s bittersweet,” Noonan said about his second-place finish. “In my mind, I think I could have had that win. But he was obviously the better driver today.”

Noonan, like Iles, was driving in his fourth Purdue Grand Prix.

“I’ve been driving go karts since I was 12 years old, so after a while it becomes kind of second nature,” he said. Jake Murphy, a senior majoring in interdisciplinary engineering, and Ben McMurray, a senior majoring in fisheries and aquatic science from Trafalgar, Ind., finished third and fourth, respectively.

Runner-up, Senior Sean Noonan, navigates traffic during the race.

Official results of the 2009 Grand Prix will be released Monday (April 27) following a standard review by the race’s scoring board.

Dustin Keller, a former Boilermaker football player who now plays for the New York Jets, was the grand marshal of the 2009 Grand Prix, which is organized each year by the Purdue Grand Prix Foundation. The foundation is a student-run, non-profit organization that conducts the kart race and related events each year to raise money for student scholarships.

The highlight of this year’s race was the brand new track at the corner of McCormick and Cherry Lane. The new track is a 4 feet wider than the previous track, which was used more than four decades.

Grand Prix Ambassadors presided over race-related events. They were Rebecca Pankop of Albion, Ind., who’s graduating in May with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, and Max Vande Vaarst of Wayne, N.J., a sophomore majoring in English education and history.

Ambassadors serve as spokespeople for the foundation, encouraging race support and business sponsorship and perform other duties. The ambassadors each received a $1,000 scholarship from the Purdue Grand Prix Foundation. Fifteen other students received scholarships ranging from $250-$750.

The foundation receives money from Toyota Motor Corp., Coca-Cola, Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics, WAZY 96.5, WLFF 95.3, WSHP 95.7, Purdue Memorial Union, Bosch, Lockheed Martin, Bowen Engineering and Army ROTC.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University’s 52nd annual Grand Prix kart race will take place Saturday (April 25) on a brand new track, located at the corner of McCormick Road and Cherry Lane.

The previous track, which was used for more than four decades, was eliminated to make way for the renovation and expansion of Mackey Arena.

“The new track is a lot nicer and about 4 feet wider than the older one,” said Adam Trost, president of the Grand Prix Foundation. “The fact that the new track will be exclusively used for Grand Prix will ensure it stays in much better condition than the old one.”

<img src="http://www.lafayette-online.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/grand-prix-practice-300x185.jpg" alt="Danny Porter of the Beta Sigma Psi team navigates through a turn during practice for the Purdue Grand Prix.
This year 33 student drivers will compete for the trophy in what has been called the “Greatest Spectacle in College Racing.” The event’s grand marshal is Dustin Keller, a former Purdue football player who now plays for the New York Jets. Keller, a West Lafayette native, earned his degree in Organizational Leadership and Supervision.

“We are really excited to have Dustin Keller as our grand marshal,” Trost said. “It’s great to have a former Purdue football player get involved in one of Purdue’s other great traditions.”

Qualification races took place Saturday (April 18). The top 27 teams that qualified will be in the main event on race day. The rest of the teams will compete in three sprint races on race day to fill the other six positions. The top two karts from each sprint race will enter the main event to round out the 33-team starting grid.

The 150-lap feature race starts at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (April 25) with driver introductions and the national anthem. Pits are open to the public from 10-11 a.m., and track seating is open to the public at 10 a.m. Practice is from 10:10-11 a.m., and heat races start at 11:20 a.m.

Parking is available near the north half of Ross-Ade Stadium, Lot H, at no cost. In addition, campus parking garages are free to visitors on weekends. Buses also will be shuttling spectators to the track. Pickup points will be at Ross-Ade, Stewart Center and the Recreational Sports Center.

In the event of rain, the race will be delayed to wait for a break in the weather. If rain persists, the race will be rescheduled for Sunday (April 26).

Tickets are $7 in advance or $10 at the gate. Programs are $3, and the official Grand Prix T-shirt is $10. A race package also is available for purchase this year. The $15 cost includes a ticket, race program and a T-shirt.

Advance tickets will be on sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Thursday (April 23) at two locations: on the Engineering Mall outside the Materials and Electrical Engineering Building and outside the Class of 1950 Lecture Hall. Tickets also will be sold on Memorial Mall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday (April 24). The rain location for ticket sales is in the main lobby of Stewart Center.

Trost said Grand Prix isn’t only for those who attend Purdue but also for the entire community.

“It’s a great family event to attend,” he said. “We encourage everyone to come and experience the excitement.”

The Grand Prix Student Ambassadors will promote the event before the main race. They are Rebecca Pankop of Albion, Ind., who’s graduating in May with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, and Max Vande Vaarst of Wayne, N.J., a sophomore majoring in English education and history.

Ambassadors serve as spokespeople for the Grand Prix Foundation, encouraging race support and business sponsorship and perform other duties. The ambassadors each received a $1,000 scholarship from the Purdue Grand Prix Foundation. Fifteen other students received scholarships ranging from $250-$750.

The Grand Prix Foundation will host a recognition and victory banquet at 6:30 p.m. Monday (April 27) at University Inn, 3001 Northwestern Ave., West Lafayette. All drivers and team members are invited to attend.

The Purdue Grand Prix Foundation is a student-run, nonprofit group that conducts the kart race and related events to raise money for scholarships. The foundation also receives money from Toyota Motor Corp., Coca-Cola, Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics, WAZY 96.5, WLFF 95.3, WSHP 95.7, Purdue Memorial Union, Bosch, Lockheed Martin, Bowen Engineering and Army ROTC.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Racing fans can get an up-close look at a variety of racecars during the second annual Motorsports on the Mall event April 23.

The event, sponsored by the Purdue Motorsports Association, will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Purdue Mall (commonly known as the engineering mall), rain or shine. It is one of several activities planned during the week leading up to Purdue’s annual Grand Prix kart race, which is April 25.

Vehicles scheduled to be on display include sprint and midget machines, a variety of National Hot Rod Association vehicles, and stock and open-wheel cars. Target Chip Ganassi racing will bring a Grand Am car and a cutaway Indy car that reveals the inner workings of the vehicle.

Andy Eckerle, president of the group, said the purpose of the second annual event is to increase awareness of the organization as well as the industry’s connection to Purdue and Indiana.

“Students and some of the owners will accompany the cars to answer questions about them,” Eckerle said. “It’s a unique opportunity to become thoroughly familiar with your favorite race car.”

The Indiana Motorsports Association also helped organize the event. Tom Weisenbach, the association’s executive director, said the motorsports industry enjoys its partnership with Purdue.

“Purdue students have such a passion for racing,” Weisenbach said. “We try to work with them hand in hand so that they have access to good job opportunities. Right now, Target Chip Ganassi racing has seven Purdue graduates working for them.”

Motorsports organizations and teams who are interested in exhibiting their display cars or components can contact Eckerle at 812-630-8801 or aeckerle@purdue.edu.

The Purdue Motorsports Association is a student group focused on racing and the motorsports industry. The group offers technical presentations, information about internships and organizes visits to facilities such as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It also annually builds a kart for the Grand Prix race.
