Boilermakers, Purdue Athletics to raise funds for Haiti

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue is taking an active role in providing aid to the victims of the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010. The Athletics Department has designated the Feb. 20 men’s basketball game versus Illinois and the Feb. 25 women’s game against Michigan State as an opportunity for fans to donate.

Team chaplain Marty Dittmar will take a team of 24 Purdue student-athletes to build homes in Haiti in May.

Team chaplain and FCA advisor Marty Dittmar will be taking a team of 24 Purdue student-athletes to Haiti in May to help build homes for the approximately one million Haitians left homeless by the quake. To help raise funds for the construction of these homes, members of Purdue’s football, basketball, volleyball, golf, baseball, tennis and swimming and diving teams will be at the exits of Mackey Arena with green collection buckets at the conclusion of the two games.

Although no specific fundraising goal has been set, each home built will cost approximately $3,700 and Dittmar and his team would like to build as many homes as possible to offset the loss of the nearly 250,000 domiciles destroyed by the earthquake.

Dittmar has been taking Purdue students to Haiti for 17 years, often making two or three trips a year. He has had student-athletes on the mission trip the last five years and has taken teams comprised primarily of student-athletes the last two years. The first donation opportunity will occur when fourth-ranked men take on Illinois on Saturday, Feb. 20, at 4p.m. in Mackey Arena and also will be accepted at women’s basketball’s senior night versus Michigan State on Feb. 25 at 7 p.m.

Fans unable to attend either contest may drop off or mail a check to the Purdue men’s basketball office, women’s basketball office or the football office anytime before or after the collection dates. All checks should be made out to EBM and a tax-deductible receipt will be mailed if a name and address are provided.

JaJuan Johnson scores his second Big Ten Player of the Week honor

PARK RIDGE, Ill. — Purdue junior forward/center JaJuan Johnson was honored with the second Big Ten Player of the Week honor of his season and career on Monday in announcement by the league office, a day after capping a week in which he averaged 20.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game to lead the Boilermakers to a pair of double-digit victories.

Johnson also earned the nod on January 25, 2010 after averaging 22.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in wins over Illinois and Michigan.

The Indianapolis native opened with week with a stellar performance in East Lansing, Mich., scoring 19 points, sharing game-high honors with seven rebounds and blocking three shots to help lead Purdue to its first victory on Michigan State’s home floor in nearly 12 years. The win over MSU also saw Johnson become the 45th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark for his career.

He joined classmates Robbie Hummel and E’Twaun Moore in Purdue’s 1,000-point club against the Spartans, giving the Boilermakers three 1,000-point scorers on the same roster for the first time since the 1999-00 campaign.

Johnson continued his strong play in the Boilermakers’ 63-40 home win over Iowa on Saturday, finishing with 21 points and 10 rebounds to mark his team-leading sixth double-double of the season. He sank 9-of-12 free throw attempts in the victory en route to his sixth 20-point performance of the season, and swatted a pair of shots.

Winners of seven in a row, Purdue will square off with Ohio State in a critical conference battle at Value City Arena on Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. ET. Big Ten Network will televise the game, with Tom Hamilton and Jim Jackson on the call, and Charissa Thompson on the sidelines, while Larry Clisby and Rob Blackman will have the call for the Purdue Sports Network.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue Alumni Association, in partnership with the John Purdue Club, will host the Boilermaker Fan Headquarters at Scotty’s Brewhouse in downtown Indianapolis during the men’s and women’s Big Ten Tournaments.

The Big Ten Women’s Tournament will take place March 4-7, and the Big Ten Men’s Tournament will take place March 11-14, both at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Scotty’s Brewhouse is located at 1 Virginia Ave. in Indianapolis. On days when Purdue is playing, there will be a pep rally and party at Scotty’s. Purdue Alumni Association staff and Purdue VIPs will be stopping by. The first 300 people to arrive at the headquarters prior to the first Purdue game of the men’s and women’s tournaments will receive rally towels. There is no cost to attend.

Purdue alumni also will follow both teams during NCAA tournament play. The Purdue Alumni Association Web site, at http://www.purduealum.org/basketball, will have information on sites where the association will be hosting fans during the tournament. The site also will offer helpful tips regarding parking, hotels and where to get fan gear.

Men’s Basketball: Purdue falls to Ohio State, 70-66

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Despite Robbie Hummel scoring a career-high 35 points and E’Twaun Moore contributing an additional 19 points, the Boilermakers weren’t able to stop Ohio State as they came from behind to win 70-66.

OSU’s Evan Turner scored a career high 32 points and had nine rebounds in his third game back since missing a month with a fracture in his back. William Buford tallied 19 points and seven rebounds for the Buckeyes (12-5, 2-3 Big Ten), who were in danger of falling out of the conference race early.

Purdue (14-2, 2-2) lost their second straight game after tying a school record with 14 straight wins to start the season. Purdue was coming off a 73-66 loss at Wisconsin on Saturday, but this was the first home loss for the Boilermakers this season.

Purdue took an early 13-9 lead before Ohio State responded with a 9-0 run, including three buckets by Buford, to take an 18-13 advantage with 10 minutes to play in the first half.

Hummel responded with perhaps the most impressive 3-point shooting barrage in Purdue history. He made six threes in the final 6:02 of the half to shoot Ohio State out of its zone. The Boilermakers closed the first half on an 11-2 run that included three 3-pointers by Hummel to take a 41-29 lead.

Hummel’s eight threes in the half tied Cuonzo Martin’s school record for 3-pointers in a game set in 1994 and broke the Mackey Arena record of seven in a game. He surpassed his previous career high of 25 before the break.

Ohio State started the second half with a 13-6 run to cut Purdue’s lead to 47-42, but Moore converted a 3-point play to temporarily slow the Buckeyes’ momentum.

The Buckeyes closed to 58-52, but a layup by Moore after an Ohio State turnover, then a fast-break dunk by JaJuan Johnson made it 62-52 with 4:07 to play.

Ohio State responded with a 10-0 run, all on points by Turner, to tie the game. Hummel left the game late with what appeared to be a dislocated finger, but he returned with two fingers on his left hand taped together with 2:04 left.

Hummel made two free throws with 20.5 seconds left, but Ohio State got the ball inbounds against Purdue’s pressure, and Buford converted two free throws with 16.8 seconds left to create the final margin.

Limited number of Purdue men’s basketball tickets available

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue fans still have a limited opportunity to purchase tickets to the eight remaining Big Ten Conference home games, including tonight’s game against Ohio State.

Even though all games have been announced as sell outs, there are a limited number of unclaimed student season tickets remaining for purchase. These tickets will be sold on a game-by-game basis, with the tickets made available the week of each specific game. These tickets will be sold to the general public for $26 each. The sales schedule for the remaining games is as follows:

No. 4 Purdue Defeats Iowa, 67-56

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Still-undefeated Purdue had to work for the 67-56 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City today. The fourth ranked Boilermakers are now 12-0 (1-0 in the Big Ten), and off to their best start in 16 seasons.

Aaron Fuller scored a season-high 15 points for Iowa to no avail. E’Twaun Moore scored 21 points and Robbie Hummel added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Boilermakers (12-0, 1-0 Big Ten), who have opened with 12 straight wins for the second time. Glenn “Big Dog” Robinson led Purdue to a school-record 14-0 start in 1993-94.

Purdue trailed by one point at halftime and led 40-36 midway through the second half. But Moore keyed a 13-2 run with three straight baskets, helping the Boilermakers push their lead to 53-38 with 8:41 left.

Purdue shot 65.2 percent in the second half, and needed just about every one of those baskets to put away the Hawkeyes (5-8, 0-1), as the Boilermakers had trouble shaking Iowa until Moore starting hitting from the perimeter midway through the second half.

Moore made two jumpers and a 3 to help push the lead to 47-38 with just under 11 minutes left, and his teammates quickly got into the act. Keaton Grant buried a 3-pointer and reserve Mark Wohlford, left wide open on the elbow, calmly hit a 3 to put Purdue ahead 53-38.

Iowa got as close as 59-51 with 4:28 left, but Moore’s three-point play and JaJuan Johnson’s turnaround floater kept the Hawkeyes from getting any closer.

The Boilermakers shot 11 of 30 in the opening half and had just two assists – both by Moore. They doubled that total just 80 seconds into the second half as Grant found a cutting Hummel for a layup and Johnson for a dunk.

Though Iowa quickly tied the game, that halftime lead was the last one the Hawkeyes held. Freshman Eric May had 11 points and eight rebounds for Iowa.

“It’s always tough to play in an environment like this,” Hummel said. “We were lucky to just play well enough to win.”

Although beating Iowa hardly seemed like a major accomplishment given how poorly the Hawkeyes have started, it’s still a positive sign for the Boilermakers.

Purdue closed out the 2008-09 regular season with a 1-4 stretch in league road games – and the Boilermakers play four of their first six Big Ten games away from home. If Purdue hopes to capture its first Big Ten regular season title since 1996, it’s imperative for the Boilermakers to establishing a winning road presence in conference play.

Purdue’s defense was simply too much for Iowa’s thin backcourt, which committed 12 of the Hawkeyes’ 16 turnovers.

“I thought our guys did a good job of staying with the basketball, pressuring the basketball and then really taking advantage of their lack of depth at the point guard position,” Painter said.

Men’s Basketball: Purdue defeats Buffalo, 101-65

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue defeated Buffalo 101-65 on Saturday. Chris Kramer and E’Twaun Moore scored 14 points each, JaJuan Johnson scored 12 and Robbie Hummel scored 11 points for the No. 4 Boilermakers (7-0).

Rodney Pierce led Buffalo (3-3) with 22 points and Calvin Betts added 14.

The Boilermakers entered the game shooting 27 percent from 3-point range, but they made six 3s in the first 10 minutes of the second half to help stretch a 45-26 halftime lead to 80-40. Purdue made 1 of 8 3s in the first half, but 11 of 16 in the second.

Seven different Purdue players made at least one 3-pointer. Purdue coach Matt Painter cleared the bench with about five minutes to play.

It was the second-highest point total for a Purdue team in five seasons under Painter, and the second time since the start of the 1999-2000 season that the Boilermakers reached the century mark.

Buffalo took a 15-14 lead before the Boilermakers responded with a 15-2 run. A powerful two-handed alley-oop dunk by Johnson on an assist from Keaton Grant and the free throw after the foul gave the Boilermakers a 30-17 lead.

Purdue extended its lead to 45-26 at halftime. The Boilermakers shot 50 percent from the field, and Kramer led the way with 10 points on 5-for-5 shooting. The Boilermakers forced 14 turnovers and held the Bulls to 34 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes.

Purdue’s D.J. Byrd, Moore and Ryne Smith each made a 3-pointer in a two-minute span to turn a 59-34 lead into a 68-38 edge with 13 minutes to play.

Purdue led by as many as 43 points. The Boilermakers shot 52 percent from the field after failing to shoot better than 46 percent in any of their previous six games.

Purdue had last scored more than 100 points in a 102-65 win over Southeast Missouri State on Dec. 30, 2006.

Men’s Basketball: #4 Purdue defeats Wake Forest, 69-58

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — E’Twaun Moore scored 22 points to help No. 4 Purdue beat Wake Forest 69-58 on Tuesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

JaJuan Johnson had 21 points and nine rebounds and Robbie Hummel added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Boilermakers (6-0), who are enjoying their highest AP ranking since 1996.

C.J. Harris and Ishmael Smith each scored 14 points and freshman Al-Farouq Aminu added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Wake Forest (4-2).

Purdue forced 25 turnovers and held the Demon Deacons to below 30 percent shooting for most of the second half. The Boilermakers shot 34 percent, but made 24 of 31 free throws and committed just nine turnovers.

Wake Forest, coming off a 78-68 home loss to William and Mary, made 10 of 19 free throws and shot 42 percent overall. The Demon Deacons led 31-29 at halftime but were outscored 40-27 after that.

It was the second consecutive lockdown defensive effort for Purdue. The Boilermakers held Central Michigan to 28 percent shooting in a 64-38 win on Saturday.

Purdue and Wake Forest combined to make just 24 of 66 shots in the first half. Wake Forest led by two points at halftime, and would have led by more if not for 3-of-10 free throw shooting. Neither team led by more than four points in the first 20 minutes. Purdue missed all nine of its 3-pointers in the first half.

Purdue shot poorly again early in the second half, but the Boilermakers were aggressive and forced Wake Forest into foul trouble. Two free throws by freshman Kelsey Barlow gave Purdue a 37-36 lead, then Chris Kramer got a steal and found Hummel streaking to the basket. Hummel made a layup and was fouled, and he converted the three-point play to give the Boilermakers a 40-36 lead.

Purdue capped the 12-0 run with a layup by Moore to take a 42-36 lead. The Boilermakers held the Demon Deacons scoreless for nearly 5 minutes during that stretch.

Purdue missed its first 13 3-point shots, but Moore finally made one to give the Boilermakers a 51-44 lead with 9 minutes left. Johnson followed with a left-handed bank shot to push the lead to nine.

The Boilermakers finally started making shots in the final 10 minutes, allowing them to stretch the lead to as many as 17 points.

Men’s Basketball: No. 6 Purdue defeats Central Michigan, 64-38

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) – Purdue’s staunch defense was too good for Central Michigan.

E’Twaun Moore scored 15 points and Robbie Hummel had 11 points and 11 rebounds, leading the No. 6 Boilermakers to a 64-38 rout Saturday.

But it certainly was not the kind of performance Boilermakers (5-0) fans expected after beating Tennessee earlier this week.

Purdue’s offense looked stale after a four-day layoff, shooting just 40.9 percent from the field in the first half. The Boilermakers were 31.2 percent for the game from 3-point range.

Finis Craddock had eight points for Central Michigan, which has lost three straight. The Chippewas (2-4) were Mid-American Conference West Division co-champs last season and are the preseason favorites in the division this season.

Purdue Men’s Basketball 2009-10 Big Ten conference schedule

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The 2009-10 Purdue Boilermaker men’s basketball conference schedule was announced on earlier today (Wednesday). The Boilers are slated to appear live on the Big Ten Network 11 times in the regular season and on the various ESPN channels no less than 12 times.

“The Big Ten is going to be as good as it’s been in a number of years,” head coach Matt Painter said. “We have a lot of teams returning experienced players. There will be no easy games on the schedule once we get into league play. I think we have a number of teams who feel like they can make a run at winning the league and advancing in the NCAA Tournament.”

The conference slate is comprised again this year of 18 regular-season games. Purdue plays Northwestern and Michigan once, but will face the other eight conference schools twice.

The Boilermakers open up conference play on the road by traveling to Iowa City, Iowa, on Dec. 29 to take on the Hawkeyes at 7 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network. Purdue returns home for its final non-conference regular-season game against West Virginia at 2:30 p.m. on New Year’s Day on ESPN.

“We’re excited about our schedule for the 2009-10 season,” Painter said. “We feel like we’ve got some great games in the non-conference portion of the schedule that will help prepare our guys for the rigors of the Big Ten season. We also feel like we have some great games on the home-slate for our fans, which is always important.”

Four days later the Boilermakers take on Minnesota, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. in Mackey Arena. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2. There are four more home games in January: Ohio State (Jan. 12 – 7 p.m. ESPN), Michigan (Jan. 23 – 4 p.m. ESPN), Wisconsin (Jan. 28 – 9 p.m. ESPN2) and Penn State (Jan. 31 – 3 p.m. Big Ten Network). Purdue’s road contests are Wisconsin (Jan. 9 – 5:30 p.m. Big Ten Network), Northwestern (Jan. 16 – 5:30 p.m. Big Ten Network) and Illinois (Jan. 19 9 p.m. ESPN).

Purdue will face Indiana twice this season. The first contest is on Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. in Bloomington and will broadcast on ESPN2. The teams meet in West Lafayette either March 2, 3 or 4. Game time and television coverage will be announced when the date is finalized.

After starting the month of February at Indiana, the Boilermakers will play at Michigan on Feb. 9 at 9 p.m. on ESPN, in East Lansing, Mich. Purdue then plays host to Iowa on Feb. 13 at 4:30 p.m. on the Big Ten Network and is on BTN the following game at Ohio State on Feb. 17 at 6:30 p.m.

The Illinois matchup in Mackey Arena will be played either Feb. 20 or 21, followed by a game at Minnesota on Feb. 24 at 8:30 p.m. on the Big Ten Network. Purdue’s final three regular season game dates will be finalized at a later time. Michigan State at home will be either Feb. 27 or 28, Indiana on March 2, 3 or 4 and at Penn State on March 6 or 7.

The 13th annual Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament will be played Thursday, March 11 through Sunday, March 14 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. All 10 games will air nationally on ESPN, ESPN2, the Big Ten Network and CBS Sports. ESPN2 will carry the first two games on Thursday and the Big Ten Network will air the final game of the evening. On Friday, ESPN will broadcast the first two quarterfinal games while the Big Ten Network will air the remaining two contests. CBS Sports will televise the semifinal and championship games on Saturday and Sunday.

The deadline for priority seating is Aug. 28.
