Purdue performers to offer singing Valentines

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Students from Purdue Musical Organizations will be available for hire as they offer singing Valentines for the upcoming holiday.

On Feb. 12, the last business day before Valentine’s Day, a group of performers from the Purdue Varsity Glee Club, the Purduettes, the Purdue Bells and the University Choir will perform a romantic tune and deliver a rose, cookie and personalized card to locations throughout the Greater Lafayette area or sing a song by phone to long-distance loves.

This year’s song selections include “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” “L-O-V-E,” “Will You Be My Valentine,” “Love Me Tender,” and “Let Me Call You Sweetheart.”

Singing valentines cost $30, and orders must be placed and paid for by Tuesday, Feb. 9. Valentines delivered by phone will not include the rose, cookie or card. Cash, check and credit cards are accepted. Checks should be made payable to Purdue University and should be mailed to PMO Singing Valentines, 712 Third St., West Lafayette, IN, 47907.

Limited time slots are available, and all orders will be confirmed on or before Feb. 11. If your order has not been confirmed by Feb. 11, contact Purdue Musical Organizations at 765-494-3941. All orders are non-refundable. In the event of an official closing of Purdue, all singing Valentines will be delivered on the next available business day.

Song selections include “Unchained Melody,” “L-O-V-E,” “Will You Be My Valentine,” “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” and a Valentine medley sung to the tune of the “Brady Bunch” theme song.

Golden Taps ceremony honors 7 Purdue students

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Seven Purdue students who died during the past academic year will be remembered on Monday (April 21) during Golden Taps, one of the university’s most solemn traditions.

Families and friends of the students, along with the general public, are invited to gather at 9 p.m. in the lobby of Schleman Hall. Dean of Students L. Tony Hawkins will greet those in attendance. The group will then move to the steps of Hovde Hall for the brief outdoor ceremony.

“Golden Taps offers families, friends and fellow students a chance to remember, honor and reconnect with their loved ones,” Hawkins said. “Ceremonies like Golden Taps allow us not only to express our grief, but also to remember the bright lives of fellow students that ended much too soon. These students will always be remembered as a part of Purdue University.”

The students who will be remembered are Terry Glenn Barnickle, a sophomore in the Statewide Technology Program from Corydon, Ind.; Kari Ann Burnett, a sophomore in the College of Liberal Arts from Marion, Ind.; Andrew Timothy Jackson, a freshman in the College of Engineering from Chanhassen, Minn.; Elaine Roundtree-Love, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction from Calumet City, Ill.; Anthony C. Lupini, a freshman in the College of Engineering from Kokomo, Ind.; York Straub, a sophomore in the College of Liberal Arts from West Lafayette, Ind.; and James D. Thangarajan, a junior in the College of Technology from Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Drummers and trumpeters from Purdue University Bands will set the tone for the event by proceeding from Elliott Hall of Music to the ceremony site, where memorial cards will list the names of the students being remembered. The Gimlet Leadership Honorary will ring a bell once for each student being honored, followed by a few moments of silence for personal reflection.

Following the playing of taps, the Purduettes and the Black Voices of Inspiration will perform.

After the ceremony, the Office of the Dean of Students and University Residences will hold a reception for the students’ families in the Schleman Hall lobby. The families also will receive a personalized certificate as a remembrance of the event.

Golden Taps has been a tradition on campus since 1994 and was originally held in the courtyard at Cary Quadrangle.

Through April 20. “Autotelematic Spider Bots.” Stewart Center Gallery. Made by artist Ken Rinaldo, an associate professor of art and technology at Ohio State University, the Spider Bots are five spider-like sculptures that interact with the public in real-time and self-modify their behaviors based on their interaction with the viewer, themselves and their environment. They will function for 15-minute periods at 10:30 a.m. and at 12:30, 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. daily.
