LAFAYETTE, Ind. — For the second year, residents can safely dispose of their expired or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications through “Operation Medicine Cabinet.” Event sponsor Home Instead Senior Care in Lafayette is partnering with the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office, Rosewalk Commons, and the West Lafayette Go Greener Commission for the one-day event that allows the public to safely dispose of expired or unwanted drugs.

“Operation Medicine Cabinet is a valuable community service that educates the public on how proper disposal not only protects loved ones from accidental ingestion but also helps protect the environment,” said Chris Irons, owner of the Lafayette Home Instead Senior Care.

Many residents flush their medications down the toilet or down a drain, he said. “But Indiana’s wastewater treatment system is not designed to remove these types of contaminants from the water supply.”

“In addition, pets and children can access medications that are carelessly thrown away in the trash,” said Irons. “Proper disposal also prevents illegal use of the drugs or theft of identity from prescription labels.”

Operation Medicine Cabinet will be held in two locations on Saturday, June 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rosewalk Commons senior community, 250 Shenandoah Drive, in Lafayette, and in the Cumberland Park farmers’ market parking lot in West Lafayette. Collection will be supervised by the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department and properly incinerated by the animal crematory at Hippensteel Funeral Home.

For more information, contact Jeanise Delano at (765) 447-8800.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Lafayette-Online) — The Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office hosts its third annual “Community Fish Fry” benefiting the local Chapter of the American Red Cross. This year’s event kicks off the “Heroes of the American Red Cross Campaign” and is scheduled for Friday, June 6, 2008 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds on Teal Road in Lafayette.

Interaction between the two agencies is not uncommon. “We often work with the American Red Cross to provide assistance and disaster relief to those affected by flooding or other disasters that impact our community. Over the past three years this has allowed members of the Sheriff’s Office an excellent opportunity to work with the Red Cross in a different capacity” said Tippecanoe County Sheriff Tracy Brown.

American Red Cross Executive Director Debbie Elsner agrees. “This collaborative effort with the Sheriff’s Department is a great example that we work well together for a common cause. We are very appreciative that the members of our local Sheriff’s Office volunteer their time in support of the American Red Cross,” Elsner said.

Tickets are priced at eight dollars ($8.00) for adults and five dollars ($5.00) for children age twelve and under. Tickets may be purchased during regular business hours at the Sheriff’s Office at 2640 Duncan Road, or at the Red Cross Chapter House located 615 N. 18th Street, Suite 101 in Lafayette. Tickets will also be on sale at the event on June 6th.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Lafayette School Corporation will be handing out over 20,000 flyers today explaining how the new Tippecanoe County WeTip Crime Reporting Hotline works. The teachers will be sending home three flyers with each child. The Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s office is encouraging parents to visit their next-door neighbors with their children and deliver a WeTip flyer to them.

The model, based on one used in the Compton Unified School District, reduced school incidents by 90% during its first semester of implementation. The distribution process is meant to spark friendly communication between neighbors. The goal is to get out the word regarding the WeTip Hotline and how it works, however, it also encourages neighbors to introduce themselves and to start talking to each other.

“A large part of illegal activity can be stopped when neighbors watch out for each other. Getting to know your neighbor is the first step,” said Kathryn Redd, Project Safe Neighborhood/Gang Initiative Coordinator, Tippecanoe Prosecutor’s Office.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Community Foundation of Greater Lafayette (CFGL) announced grant recipients at a Grant Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at 3:30 p.m. at the Elmhurst Community Building (1114 State Street in Lafayette, Indiana). The Community Foundation awarded $125,893 in Tier 1 Discretionary Grants to seven charitable organizations. This was the 2008 funding cycle for requests over $15,000.

Each grant addresses at least one of the six priority community needs adopted by The Foundation’s Board of Directors: Education, Children/Youth, Health, Diversity, Physical Environment, and Arts & Culture. Grants awarded this cycle highlight projects that address youth, health, and the arts.

$15,000 — Habitat for Humanity of Lafayette — Youth United Build

Doug Taylor, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity says, “Providing affordable home ownership to Lafayette families is a huge need in Tippecanoe County. By teaming Habitat for Humanity with local youth led by Jefferson High School’s STRIVE class on this Youth United Build, local teens will learn the value of giving back to their community. Thanks to The Community Foundation’s grant, both the youth and their community are strengthened by this project.”

$20,000 — Tippecanoe Community Health Clinic — Implementation of digital radiography in Dental Clinic

President and CEO, Veronique LeBlanc, expressed thanks, saying, “The Tippecanoe Community Health Clinic is the area’s sole provider of comprehensive primary health and dental care to low-income people. In 2007, TCHC served 8,690 patients for 39,066 visits. The Dental Clinic serves 1,452 patients each year. Implementation of this new Digital Radiography technology will ultimately mean less cost and a more productive dental practice with a potential to serve 450 more patients on an annual basis. The Community Foundation understands how important health care is in our community. We appreciate their grant of $20,000 to make this dream for the Dental Clinic a reality for so many people in need.”

$20,000 — Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette — New roof for Monon Depot Theatre

“The Monon Depot Theatre serves as a cultural anchor in the Historical Centennial Neighborhood. Upkeep of the building, especially large capital projects such as a new roof, help to secure Civic Theatre’s home thus continuing to enrich the neighborhood and the broader community,” says Managing Director, Steve Koehler. “The Community Foundation of Greater Lafayette’s grant to provide a new roof for our building allows us to better work on stronger theatrical productions and broader educational opportunities.”

Other grants awarded to address community needs include:

$16,610 — Wabash Center, Inc. Kids’ Connection — Playground surface at Kids’ Connection

$20,000 — Tippecanoe County Child Care, Inc. — Toddler playground equipment

$15,000 — National Youth Sports Program – Purdue University — Medical exams for low-income children in Tippecanoe County

$19,283 — Community and Family Resource Center — Doors for the South Side Community Center

There are still two opportunities to submit discretionary grant proposals in 2008. Information about funding cycles, proposal requirements, and past discretionary grant recipients may be found on The Community Foundation’s website, www.cfglaf.org.

Tier 3 — Proposals requesting less than $7,500 — Proposals accepted year-round.
Tier 2 — Proposals requesting $7,500 – $14,999 — Application Deadline: September 2, 2008

The Community Foundation of Greater Lafayette, established in 1970, serves the Tippecanoe County area. Its mission is to inspire, nurture, and practice philanthropy, stewardship, and leadership in the communities served. In 2007, The Community Foundation awarded $689,474 in 108 grants to charitable organizations and scholarship recipients. From that amount, $283,137 was awarded in 41 discretionary grants. For additional information, visit www.cfglaf.org or call (765) 742-9078.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — LSB Financial Corp. (Nasdaq: LSBI), the parent company of Lafayette Savings Bank, FSB, today reported earnings for the quarter ended March 31, 2008. Compared to the first quarter of 2007, net income was $515,000, down 33.9%, resulting in diluted earnings per share of $0.33. LSB Financial President & CEO, Randolph F. Williams stated, “The current banking environment is extremely challenging, and I am pleased with our recent growth and positive trends. We are starting to see activity in the real estate market and loans were up $7.1 million, or 2.3%, compared to year-end. Deposits also increased over $8.5 million, or 3.7%, during the quarter.”

Williams continued, “Largely as a result of the Fed cutting short term interest rates, an unprecedented 3.0% in just six months, the net interest margin for the first quarter of 2008 was down 37 basis points to 3.11% when compared to the previous year. This translates to a $424,000 decrease in net interest income. While interest rate changes are out of our control, our managers have done a remarkable job of improving asset quality, growing core deposits, and containing expenses. At quarter end, non-performing loans totaled $8.3 million or 2.69% of total loans, compared to $10.0 million, or 3.32%, at December 31, 2007 and $12.5 million, or 3.97%, one year ago.”

Williams continued, “Despite the fact that Tippecanoe County’s unemployment rate has been increasing since year end, we are seeing signs of an improving economy. Our delinquent loans are at a 19-month low, properties are selling at closer to the appraised values and there has been a slowing in the rate of local foreclosures and bankruptcies. Data from March of this year indicates that Indiana is now 11th in the country in foreclosures, with one out of every 538 households facing foreclosure. Last year Indiana was ranked in the top three.”

The Company also announced that it will pay a quarterly cash dividend of $0.25 per share to shareholders of record as of the close of business on May 9, 2008 with a payment date of June 6, 2008. Williams stated, “At slower growth times like this, we are pleased to be able to return equity to our shareholders in the form of a higher dividend. This is particularly significant based on the current favorable dividend tax rate.”

The closing market price of LSB stock on May 1, 2006 was $18.00 per share as reported by the NASDAQ National Market.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University students enrolled in spring semester 2008 will be able to use their student identification cards to vote in Tuesday’s (May 6) Indiana primary, thanks to the university’s Registrar’s Office and the Tippecanoe County clerk.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday voted 6-3 to uphold Indiana’s law, one of the nation’s strictest, requiring individuals to present picture identifications at the precincts in order to vote. The law also requires expiration dates on the identifications, and no expiration date is contained on the Purdue ID card.

“We have some students who do not have driver’s licenses or other forms of ID that wouldn’t have been able to vote on Tuesday,” said Rich Wells, assistant comptroller of collections.

Purdue and Tippecanoe County Clerk Linda Phillips came up with a solution for Tuesday. The registrar’s office, which controls student information, will provide a disk to the one polling precinct on campus — in Room 118 of Purdue Memorial Union — and three other precincts near campus. The clerk’s office will have laptop computers at each of these sites to verify student information. The students must have been enrolled during spring semester 2008.

A disk also will be sent to the clerk’s office, which will allow students to use their Purdue ID cards at any polling site in the county. Poll workers at those sites would call the clerk’s office to verify information.

“The disks Purdue will provide contain directory information that does not include sensitive data,” Wells said. “Students who have asked that their directory information be restricted will not be included.”

The other West Lafayette precincts at which laptops will be placed are: at Morton Community Center, 222 N. Chauncey St; Federated Church, 2400 Sycamore Lane; and the Klondike branch of the Tippecanoe County Public Library, 3062 Lindberg Road.

Polling stations open at 6 a.m. Tuesday and close at 6 p.m.
