WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Twenty-seven Purdue student-athletes were honored as Distinguished Scholar Award recipients by the Big Ten Conference on Wednesday.
The award was established by the Big Ten Faculty Representatives in February in order to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. In order to be eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award, recipients must be in at least their second academic year at the institution and have a minimum GPA of 3.7 for the previous academic year, excluding summer school.
Of Purdue’s 27 recipients, six posted a perfect 4.0 GPA this year. Those individuals are bolded on the complete list below.
The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for their academic career. A total of 150 Boilermaker student athletes garnered Academic All-Big Ten honors during the 2008-09 school year. Purdue’s Distingushed Scholar Award recipients follow.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue men’s track and field team earned a trio of spots on the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Academic All-America team on Tuesday. A record total of 327 student-athletes representing 107 Division I institutions qualified for national scholastic honors in 2009.

Lance Moe qualified for his third consecutive NCAA Mideast Regional Championship in 2009.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.
Juniors Chris Kirkwood and Lance Moe, and sophomore Josh Hembrough were the trio of Boilermaker student-athletes to earn national scholastic honors, as all three achieved NCAA Outdoor Regional qualification this season. Kirkwood and Moe both surpassed the regional standard in the high jump, while Hembrough qualified in the 110-meter hurdles. Hembrough also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships and went on to earn USTFCCCA Indoor All-America honors with an eighth-place showing in the 60-meter hurdles.
The University of Nebraska led all institutions with 16 student-athletes on the All-Academic team, followed by Brigham Young University with 12 student-athletes on the team. University of Oregon placed 11 student-athletes on the team. The Big 12 Conference led all conferences with 46 selections, with the Pacific-10 Conference following closely with 42 selections. The Mountain West Conference had 28 men’s student-athletes earn All-Academic honors.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue women’s track and field team earned nine spots on the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Academic All-America team on Monday. A record total of 531 student-athletes representing 146 Division I institutions qualified for national scholastic honors in 2009.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.
The nine Boilermakers making the cut were seniors Kara Patterson and Mallory Peck, juniors Nan Hammel, Ashlee Lengacher, Brianna Neumann and Kristin Phillips, sophomore Emily Breslin and first-years Leah Eber and Elizabeth Stover. All nine qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships during the outdoor campaign, while Peck and Neumann also posted provisional qualifying marks during the indoor season. Patterson was the lone All-America honoree of the group, taking second in the women’s javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The University of Nebraska led all institutions with 19 student-athletes on the All-Academic team. Brigham Young University and the University of Oregon followed with 16 student-athletes each on the All-Academic team. The Pacific-10 Conference led all conferences with 56 selections, with the Big 12 Conference following closely with 50 selections. The Southeastern Conference had 48 women’s student-athletes earn All-Academic honors.
