Update on traffic disruptions around Purdue and Greater Lafayette

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A Purdue University Physical Facilities report offers updates on traffic and parking disruptions on and around the West Lafayette campus.

On campus

Reminder: The Y-shaped intersection near Elliott Hall of Music and the Armory is now a three-way stop.

Reminder: On Saturday, July 4th, campus traffic will be congested and parking restricted in some areas for the 2009 Stars and Stripes Celebration and Fireworks at Slayter Center for the Performing Arts. At the Gatewood Wing construction site alongside the Mechanical Engineering Building, the approach route for heavy vehicles is now from the intersection of State Street and Marsteller Street, coming north. In the area near Stanley Coulter Hall, pedestrians are to use the west part of Centennial Mall. Construction traffic will use the east part, nearer Wetherill Laboratory. Small golf cart-type vehicles are to avoid both.

Gatewood Wing work in the next two weeks is to include 1) timber lagging; 2) continuing mass excavation. For continued updates and information about this project, go to www.purdue.edu/architect/about/construction/2734.htm.

Parking garage cleaning: At the south half of the University Street Garage, cleaning is to continue through Thursday (July 2). Work is being done from 10:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. Next is the north half of the Northwestern Avenue Garage, scheduled for July 5-20.

State Road 26 West between County roads 300 West (Klondike Road) and 500 West will close July 6 and remain closed until late fall for a sight distance improvement project at both intersections (SR 26 and CR 300W, and SR 26 and CR 500W), both of which will be closed.

Off Campus

Vehicles on CR 400W will be able to cross SR 26. Residents along the closed section of SR 26 will have access to their homes. The southbound off ramp from Interstate 65 at State Road 43 is to be closed for reconstruction of the ramp. This is at exit 178. The closure may continue until July 13. The detour exit for southbound I-65 is to use Exit 188, go east on State Road 18, then south on State Road 43. This announcement is from the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).

CityBus detour to affect route 3A Lafayette Square

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — CityBus announced today that the intersection of State Street and 22nd Street at Earl Avenue in Lafayette will close due to construction beginning Tuesday, September 9, for approximately three months.

3A Lafayette Square buses will not be able to serve State St., 26th, 22nd, or Teal Rd. (between 26th and 18th streets). Both inbound and outbound 3A buses will remain on 18th St. for the duration of the
construction project, serving 18th St. between Main St. and Shoshone.

All passengers usually boarding along State, 26th, 22nd, or Teal Rd. east of 18th St. will need to walk to 18th St. to board the 3A buses.

Jeff H.S. and Tecumseh students who currently board the inbound 3A along 22nd St. will need to board at the bus stop at Hiatt and 18th St.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue University Physical Facilities reports have provided notes on some current and upcoming traffic and parking disruptions on campus.

– The closure of Stadium Mall Drive for the gateway project near Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering is now scheduled to continue until Oct. 24. Sidewalks remain open.

– The area immediately in front of the Hovde Hall steps is off limits to motorized vehicles, including club cars and scooters, throughout this year during restoration of the utility tunnel between Hovde and the Purdue Mall fountain (Class of 1939 water sculpture). Four planters are in place to indicate the prohibited area.

– Phased work on sidewalks along Horticulture Drive will continue until late November. The work is part of the campus-wide repair of utility tunnel tops. The project soon will include Agricultural Mall and lane restrictions on Marsteller Street near the Transformation sculpture at the east end of Agricultural Mall.

– The area around Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry (WTHR) and the North Power Plant (HPN) will see completion of some work but will have continued disruptions. The High Voltage Project’s vault expansion is nearly done, but temporary substations will remain for a time and will be in a fenced area west of Wetherill along Centennial Mall and near Central Drive. Central will be closed.

Meanwhile, fencing of other areas around the North Power Plant is beginning due to concerns about masonry on that building’s exterior. This restriction will affect parking and pedestrian access along the east and south sides of the plant. However, other parking spaces in the lot will remain usable. Pedestrians will be able to move east-west south of the plant by staying near Wetherill. The east entry (from the lot) to Convocations will be closed, but Convocations’ west entry (on Centennial Mall) will be open. The south (lot) entry to the Engineering Administration Building will remain open.

Public works projects to create disruptions of traffic, parking around Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — In addition to numerous ongoing streets and public works projects going on in and around Purdue University in West Lafayette, here are notes on a few expected to cause disruptions this week.

– Sewer lining project. At the north end of Oval Drive (north of Memorial Mall), vehicle and pedestrian restrictions will be in place until at least Wednesday; a map is at www.purdue.edu/physicalfacilities/travel/pdf/Class50_HEAV.pdf. Work continues also east of that area toward Heavilon Hall and Grant Street. Lane closures on University Street between First and Third streets, and on a small segment of Second Street, are expected to continue until Aug. 3.

– The vehicle loop in front of Freehafer Hall will close at noon Friday and remain closed through the weekend for work on the high-voltage project.

– Work on the Marsteller Street Garage will include positioning a lift at each stairwell. This will not block the alley behind Pao Hall, but will block the alley between the garage and the St. Thomas Aquinas Center during some daytime hours through Wednesday.

– White stripes will be painted Saturday on the following paved parking lots: all Freehafer lots, the lot south of South Campus Courts and the lot south of Lilly Hall. Avoiding parking there is preferable for the crew and advisable for vehicles.

Barack Obama to visit Purdue for national security discussion

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama’s Wednesday (July 16) visit to Purdue University will require traffic rerouting on campus.

Sen. Barack Obama will visit Purdue for a roundtable discussion on national security.

Some areas near the Purdue Memorial Union will be shut down for security purposes, said Purdue police Capt. Tim Potts. The service drive just north of the Union will be closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic. The left lane of Grant Street between State Street and Northwestern Avenue will be closed to create parking space for media satellite trucks. Visitors to campus for the event are encouraged to use the Grant Street Parking Garage.

The Purdue Students for Barack Obama chapter is sponsoring Obama’s visit as part of an invitation-only roundtable discussion on national security.

Obama is scheduled to arrive at the Purdue Airport around 10:30 a.m. and then proceed to the Purdue Memorial Union North Ballroom where the summit will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Topics for the discussion, “Confronting 21st Century Threats,” will include issues related to nuclear nonproliferation, bioterrorism, cybersecurity and emerging national security threats.

The Students for Barack Obama chapter, which has about 150 active members, helped arrange the visit, said organization Vice President Ashley Rozier.

“By choosing to visit Purdue, Sen. Obama shows that he and his campaign are really taking Indiana seriously,” she said. “The topics of the discussion are very relevant to the community, state, nation and world.”

According to a news release on the Obama campaign Web site, Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh and former Georgia Sen. Sam Nunn will take part in the national security discussion. The panel also will include two experts on biosecurity, Tara O’Toole of Center for Bio Security at the University of Pittsburgh and Dr. David Relman of Stanford University Medical School, and cybersecurity experts Paul Kurtz, a former senior member on the National Security Council and Homeland Security Council, and Alan Wade, former chief information officer for the CIA.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Here is an updated list of traffic disruptions on and near the Purdue University West Lafayette campus.

In addition to numerous ongoing disruptions, several will begin this week or have just begun:

South Russell Drive is scheduled to close today through July 28 for reconstruction south of Harrison Street and north of the railroad tracks. The gravel parking lot along the east side of the closed portion of the street also will close. Access to campus buildings south of the tracks is from South River Road via Ahlers Road. Stadium Avenue between David Ross Road and McCormick Road is scheduled to close today for bridge replacement, according to the tentative schedule of the Tippecanoe County Highway Department.
An extensive sewer-lining project is expected to affect traffic behind the Union Club Hotel near Grant Street today and tomorrow.
On University Street, lanes are closed until Aug. 3 from First to Third streets and on Second Street to just before the south entrance to the University Street Garage. This is also for the sewer lining project. Map: www.purdue.edu/physicalfacilities/travel/pdf/2_3_univ.pdf.

The service drive north of the Engineering Administration Building is scheduled to close today for two weeks.
Grant Street access to the south entrance of the Grant Street Garage will be closed from 7 to 9 a.m. Wednesday. Access from State Street to that entrance, as well as to the Andrew Place (east) entrance will remain open.
Steven Beering Way will have only southbound traffic along the west side of the lot north of Ross-Ade Stadium for two weeks starting today due to a drainage project.
Phase II of campus sidewalk repair and rehabilitation will begin today and affect various areas north of State Street, including some parking spaces.

Purdue issues updates to traffic disruptions on West Lafayette campus

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University has issued a new list of traffic and parking disruptions on the West Lafayette campus.

1. The gravel A parking lot west of the Police Department building (TERY) was to close today due to construction and reopen in late August.

2. Nimitz Drive was to close today between Martin Jischke Drive and Gates Drive, next to the Discovery Learning Center construction site, and reopen July 7. Martin Jischke Drive next to the site was to reopen today, allowing traffic on it to reach Harrison Street, though traffic there has lane restrictions.

3. The roughly triangular grassy area west of the Mechanical Engineering Building was to receive fencing today in preparation for excavation in the following days as part of the ME Utilities site project. The area is between Purdue Mall and the Engineering Administration Building.

Fiery crash closes I-65 north of Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A crash involving three semi tractor trailers has closed part of Interstate 65 north of Lafayette, Indiana. One of the vehicles has caught fire, and State Police are rerouting traffic off of I-65 onto State Road 43.

According to an Indiana State Police spokesman, no serious injuries were sustained in the crash this afternoon.

Gas leak near Russell Street, Wiley Hall repaired

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A gas line rupture on the Purdue West Lafayette campus on Wednesday (June 18) that forced the evacuation of Wiley Hall and some residences along Russell Street has been repaired.

The leak occurred around 10 a.m. when an asphalt and paving contractor working in the area hit a two-inch gas line. Purdue University police and fire departments evacuated Wiley Hall and residences at 409, 427 and 501 Russell Street as a precautionary measure.

A crew from Vectren Energy was called to the scene and repaired the broken line by 12:30 p.m. After checking the evacuated areas to ensure they were safe, fire department personnel reopened Wiley Hall and the residences.

ALERT: West Lafayette motorists should avoid parts of Russell Street due to gas leak

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue police are urging people to avoid Russell Street east of Wiley Hall after a contractor working in the area hit a gas line.

Purdue police and fire departments responded to the initial call, and Vectren is currently at the scene to repair the gas line. Wiley Hall and residences at 452 and 501 Russell Street have been evacuated as a precautionary measure, said Purdue interim police chief John Cox.
