Update on traffic disruptions around Purdue and Greater Lafayette

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A Purdue University Physical Facilities report offers updates on traffic and parking disruptions on and around the West Lafayette campus.

On campus

Reminder: The Y-shaped intersection near Elliott Hall of Music and the Armory is now a three-way stop.

Reminder: On Saturday, July 4th, campus traffic will be congested and parking restricted in some areas for the 2009 Stars and Stripes Celebration and Fireworks at Slayter Center for the Performing Arts. At the Gatewood Wing construction site alongside the Mechanical Engineering Building, the approach route for heavy vehicles is now from the intersection of State Street and Marsteller Street, coming north. In the area near Stanley Coulter Hall, pedestrians are to use the west part of Centennial Mall. Construction traffic will use the east part, nearer Wetherill Laboratory. Small golf cart-type vehicles are to avoid both.

Gatewood Wing work in the next two weeks is to include 1) timber lagging; 2) continuing mass excavation. For continued updates and information about this project, go to www.purdue.edu/architect/about/construction/2734.htm.

Parking garage cleaning: At the south half of the University Street Garage, cleaning is to continue through Thursday (July 2). Work is being done from 10:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. Next is the north half of the Northwestern Avenue Garage, scheduled for July 5-20.

State Road 26 West between County roads 300 West (Klondike Road) and 500 West will close July 6 and remain closed until late fall for a sight distance improvement project at both intersections (SR 26 and CR 300W, and SR 26 and CR 500W), both of which will be closed.

Off Campus

Vehicles on CR 400W will be able to cross SR 26. Residents along the closed section of SR 26 will have access to their homes. The southbound off ramp from Interstate 65 at State Road 43 is to be closed for reconstruction of the ramp. This is at exit 178. The closure may continue until July 13. The detour exit for southbound I-65 is to use Exit 188, go east on State Road 18, then south on State Road 43. This announcement is from the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).

Traffic disruptions: South end of Discovery Park

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University West Lafayette has issued an updated list of traffic disruptions for this week.

Several streets will be affected this week by the Harrison Street Aerial Line Relocation Project. Plans call for closure of South Martin Jischke Drive at Harrison Street until Saturday, such that southbound vehicles will not be able to reach that intersection. East-west traffic on Harrison/Nimitz Drive will continue to have rerouted lanes. At times, Gates Road may be blocked and flag workers will direct traffic. Also, plans call for positioning of a crane at the southeast corner of Gates Road and Nimitz Drive at 10 a.m. Tuesday for installation of electrical material for the aerial line project; traffic is likely to blocked during that work. A general pattern of disruptions for construction of Discovery Learning Center and Hockmeyer Hall of Structural Biology, each just north of Harrison Street on either side of South Martin Jischke Drive, will continue through summer 2009.

In other traffic matters:

– The area north of Harrison Hall, and south of Hillenbrand Hall, is now a plaza and unavailable for parking or through traffic.

– South Russell Drive, south of Harrison Street, is expected to close July 7 for reconstruction. During the closure, access to the south service area of campus will be from South River Road via Ahlers Road. http://www.purdue.edu/physicalfacilities/travel/pdf/S.Russell_RR.pdf.

– Closure of Stadium Avenue along the intramural fields is expected July 7. The Tippecanoe County Highway Department plans to replace a small bridge on Stadium Avenue just west of David Ross Road. http://www.purdue.edu/physicalfacilities/travel/pdf/Tippi_Bridge_Stadium.pdf.

– Numerous other summer projects call for caution by motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists. The High Voltage Project continues in several areas: http://www.purdue.edu/physicalfacilities/HVP. Masonry work is under way on Hicks Undergraduate Library, Stanley Coulter Hall, the Civil Engineering Building, and Lynn Hall.

This Web site displays the construction projects around the West Lafayette campus that will affect pedestrian and vehicular traffic throughout the summer.

Click on the colored and numbered sites for the individual project’s location, construction dates, and related information. (Pop-ups must be enabled to use this feature.)

The site is updated for each construction season- spring, summer, and fall.
