Kroger recalls lite mayo due to possible health risk


CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Kroger Co. said today it is recalling Kroger Lite Mayo in 32-ounce plastic jars with a “Sell by” date of SEP-25-09 sold in Kroger stores in Southwestern Ohio, including Cincinnati and Dayton, and in Northern Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and/or abdominal pain.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the product.

Kroger is recalling the following item:

  • Kroger Lite Mayo sold in 32-ounce jars with a “Sell by” date of SEP-25-09 under the following UPC Code: 11110 66090.

Customers who have purchased the above product should not consume it and should return it to a store for a full refund or replacement.

Midwest Ice Cream recalls 56 1 oz squares and half gallons of Meijer’s candy bar swirl ice cream


BELVIDERE, Ill. — Midwest Ice Cream of Belvidere, Illinois is voluntarily recalling 56 ounce squares of Meijer’s Candy Bar Swirl ice cream printed with a date of January 6, 2010 or earlier (printed as MM/DD/YY) and a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 4125000167; and half gallons of Meijer’s Candy Bar Swirl ice cream printed with a date of September 8, 2009 or earlier (printed as MM/DD/YY) and a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 4125000167. This recall was initiated because the affected products contain peanut ingredients supplied by Peanut Corporation of America which may be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in children, elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Midwest Ice Cream has received no reports of illnesses related to the affected products. No other Meijer ice cream products manufactured by Midwest Ice Cream are involved in this recall.

The recall involves approximately 28,000 units of the 56 ounce squares and 185,000 units of the half gallons which were distributed in Michigan, Northern Indiana, Western Ohio, Northeast Illinois and Northern Kentucky through numerous retail outlets.

HOW TO IDENTIFY THE RECALLED PRODUCTS

This recall includes 56 ounce squares of Meijer’s Candy Bar Swirl ice cream printed with a date of January 6, 2010 or earlier (printed as MM/DD/YY) and a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 4125000167; and half gallons of Meijer’s Candy Bar Swirl ice cream printed with a date of September 8, 2009 or earlier (printed as MM/DD/YY) and a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 4125000167. Consumers can find the date on one end of the package and the UPC code on the opposite end of the package of the squares; and the date on one end of the package and the UPC code on the other end of the package of the half gallons. No other Meijer ice cream products manufactured by Midwest Ice Cream are involved in this recall.

Midwest Ice Cream has ceased distribution of the affected products. Consumers who have these products should not consume them. They should discard the products and may return the product package to the place of purchase for a full refund or exchange. Consumers with questions can contact the Company at 1-877-234-0022.

The Illinois Department of Public Health and the Food and Drug Administration have been notified of this voluntary recall.

Voluntary recall for some Meijer peanuts, ice cream novelties


GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Meijer initiated a voluntary recall of two types of its Meijer Brand dry-roasted peanuts and four types of Meijer Brand ice cream novelties sold in all of its stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. Meijer removed all identified products from its stores and gas stations. All sell-by dates are impacted by this recall.

Specifically, Meijer has recalled the following items:

  • Meijer Bulk Dry Roasted Peanuts, UPC #2-18537-00000-8
  • Markets of Meijer Dry Roasted Peanuts, UPC #7-19283-91733-1
  • Meijer Vanilla Sundae Cone w/ Peanuts (with Garfield on packaging) UPC #7-19283-74019-9
  • Meijer Vanilla Sundae Cone w/ Peanuts (without Garfield on packaging) UPC #7-19283-91235-0
  • Meijer Fudge Sundae Cone w/ Peanuts (with Garfield on packaging) UPC #7-19283-74020-5
  • Meijer Fudge Sundae Cone w/ Peanuts (without Garfield on packaging) UPC #7-19283-91245-9

Meijer has taken these steps following announcements from the products’ manufacturers that they may possibly be contaminated with salmonella. While none of the Meijer brand products have been identified as contaminated or linked to any illness, Meijer has received these products from Nut Bar Company, Inc. and Fieldbrook Foods, both of which used peanuts from Peanut Corporation of America in Blakely, Georgia, which has been verified as the source of contaminated peanut products.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. Meijer requests that customers who have purchased these products destroy the product or return them to any Meijer location for a full refund.   • Meijer Peanut Butter and Jelly Ice Cream, UPC #00000007-19283-96635-3
  • Meijer Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream, UPC #00000007-19283-96843-2
