Technical Assistance Program to offer energy workshops

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University’s Technical Assistance Program (TAP) will offer energy-related workshops during June and July in Indianapolis, West Lafayette, Fort Wayne and Evansville.

Two are U.S. Department of Energy BestPractices workshops:

Fundamentals of Compressed Air Systems will be offered June 22 in Fort Wayne, June 23 in West Lafayette and June 24 in Evansville.

This workshop is appropriate for anyone in a plant’s work force who uses compressed air or has responsibility for the system. Cost is $125 per person.

Participants will learn how to tailor a compressed air system management action plan for a plant; compute the current cost of a plant’s compressed air system; determine the impact of different compressor control types; measure and create a baseline of system performance; identify steps for proper system operation; and cut costs.
Steam Systems End-User Workshop will be offered Aug. 4 in Fort Wayne.
It is designed for industrial and institutional plant personnel who have steam system responsibilities, such as energy managers, steam system supervisors, engineers and equipment operators. Cost is $125 per person.

Participants will learn about steam generation efficiency, resource utilization effectiveness and steam distribution system losses.

A TAP Green Specialist Energy Management Workshop will be offered July 9 in Indianapolis. It is part of the Green Enterprise Development program aimed at engineers, green team participants and environmental managers. Cost is $395 per person.

TAP has designed its Green Enterprise Development program for manufacturers and others interested in learning how to apply sustainable, environmentally friendly practices in the workplace. Participants in the program can earn a Green Specialist Certificate accredited by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

Participants in the Indianapolis Level 2 Energy Management workshop will learn energy basics, how to manage energy usage and invest in energy efficiency, the pros and cons of renewable energy sources and how to include all system costs in a project evaluation.

Identity theft and fraud workshop hosted by PEFCU

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue Employees Federal Credit Union (PEFCU) invites the Greater Lafayette community to attend a no-cost Identity Theft and Fraud Workshop at 6 p.m., on Thursday, June 18, at the Purdue Research Park Technology Center located at 3000 Kent Ave, West Lafayette.

One in five consumers becomes a victim of some kind of identity theft each year. The results can be devastating: damage to one’s credit report, average monetary losses of $1,200 or more, and nearly 30 hours of personal time spent to resolve the issue. Attend this workshop and learn from local experts who work in PEFCU’s Risk Department ways to fight fraud.

Tips will be provided on the following:

How to protect yourself from identity theft
How to identify fraud scams
What to do if you are a fraud victim

SIA Auto Safety Fair to educate, inform drivers about realities of road

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — On Saturday, May 30, Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) will host the first-ever SIA Auto Safety Fair from noon until 3:00 PM at the SIA Recreation Center. Several local, regional and national organizations specializing in auto safety are coming together to provide the community with demonstrations, workshops and the latest information and technology to help promote safe driving.

Trisha Hessinger, former race car driver and national TV show host will be conducting mini car care workshops to help drivers learn how to maintain their vehicles for improved safety and performance.

These workshops are geared for drivers who are less experienced with auto maintenance. There will also be a special section focusing on proper tire tread and air pressure.

Parents of teen drivers can get information about the latest technology in teen driver safety including sensors that monitor and report dangerous driving habits to parents via email or text messages and in vehicle cameras that turn on when a teen driver exhibits dangerous driving habits. Several organizations will be available to discuss teen driver safety, driver education courses and roadside assistance programs geared for teens and their parents.

Drivers can safely experience the dangers of impaired driving first-hand by attempting to maneuver the drunk driving simulation course or trying the texting-while-driving game. The latest technology and resources to help prevent drunk driving and texting while driving will be featured.

Certified car seat technicians will be on hand to educate drivers about proper car seat installation and drivers 18 years and older can try the “Seat Belt Convincer”, a crash simulator that lets you experience the power of a low speed impact and understand the importance of seat belts. Drivers can get information about how to lower their risks of injury when involved in an accident and how to avoid
common hazards on the road.

Drivers can also obtain important information about current laws, including proper accident procedures and recent changes to teen driving laws; while the Lafayette Police Department D.A.R.E. officer will takes kids for a ride on the Public Accessibility Cart.

BMV2YOU, the mobile BMV branch will provide a convenient, on-site office where drivers can get new ID cards, titles and voters registrations or renew licenses and registrations.

Free workshop provides tips for debt management

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A Thursday (March 26) workshop sponsored in part by the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service will teach attendees how to help themselves and others better manage debt.
The Identifying Resources for Dealing with Debt Management workshop will begin at 6 p.m. in Ivy Hall, Room 1106, on the Lafayette campus of Ivy Tech Community College.

The workshop is for anyone who is interested in debt management, including human resource professionals, bankers, educators, social workers, church counselors and managers.

Workshop topics will include self-help, credit counseling, debt management plans, debt consolidation, bankruptcy, debt negotiation programs and judgment-proof plans.

“Anyone who is interested in learning about debt is encouraged to attend,” said Kathy Murray, Purdue Extension educator, Tippecanoe County. “In this time of financial hardship, we understand that it can be harder than normal to climb out of debt. This workshop will teach participants ways to help those around them deal with debt and also how to deal with their own debts, should they have any.”

Some of the covered topics will include self-help, credit counseling, debt management plans, debt consolidation, bankruptcy, debt negotiation programs and judgment-proof plans.

“When it comes time to think about credit counseling, some resources may be more helpful in certain instances than others,” Murray said. “We want to give participants the tools to help themselves and others make informed decisions when it comes to dealing with debt. We will have a panel of experts, including attorneys, on hand to talk about debt management.”

Identifying Resources for Dealing with Debt Management is sponsored by the Tippecanoe Area Economic Education Coalition, with resources and speakers provided by Purdue University Extension, Purdue Employees Federal Credit Union, Family Services Inc. and Lafayette Area Resource Academy.

Purdue offering two summer electric guitar-making workshops

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University will offer two separate workshops this summer for those interested in making their own electric guitars.

The High School Guitar Workshop will be held June 23-26 and is open to any student entering 10th, 11th or 12th grades. Students will be introduced to various advanced manufacturing technologies used in the guitar-making process and taught in the College of Technology. No previous experience with woodworking or manufacturing tools is necessary.

Students will stay in residence halls and eat in campus dining halls during the week. They also will have the opportunity to explore the campus during the evenings to get a taste of college life at Purdue, said workshop director Mark French, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering technology.

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation and the D’Addario Music Foundation are sponsoring the workshop.

The $650 registration fee includes lodging, meals, all materials needed to complete one guitar, a padded carrying bag and amplifier, and a workshop T-shirt. The second workshop is the Purdue Guitar Workshop from July 6-10. It will feature industry professionals who will teach participants how to craft, engineer and customize their own solid-body electric guitar. Experts from Purdue, Taylor Guitars and Fender Guitars will be in attendance.

The class will meet daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Knoy Hall of Technology, Room 106, and Michael Golden Labs, rooms 1208 and B217. Workshop participants will learn the practical and technical aspects of making guitars. The class is not for credit, and no previous experience with guitar making is necessary.

French said participants will utilize the latest in advanced manufacturing equipment, such as a CNC laser cutter and CNC router, in addition to sanders and saw planers.

The cost for the workshop is $1,295, which includes all materials and supplies. Purdue employees can receive a $150 discount. Attendees will receive a complete kit of materials, including a guitar body and neck made with figured and exotic woods and with most of the machining already completed. Participants will then be able to tailor the final shape of the body and neck, as well as add other custom touches, such as paint.

Online resume writing workshop offered at Ivy Tech Library

LAFAYETTE, Ind — What information do potential
employers expect to find on résumés and what is the best way to use online job searching services, are two of the questions that will be addressed at an online resume writing workshop in the computer lab at the Tippecanoe County/Ivy Tech Library on January 20 at 6:30p.

Carol Santos from WorkOne in Lafayette will help participants learn to market work skills and prepare an online resume. Topics will also include: how to prepare your first résumé, ways to update an existing résumé, and how to follow up on applications.
