Asahi Japanese Steakhouse features teppanyaki style Japanese cooking (think Benihana) and is known around town for their excellent and reasonably priced sushi. Located in the former home of Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant, the exterior appearance of the building is a tad deceiving. Inside, however, you’ll find the decor better reflects the traditional Japanese cuisine.

Asahi is conveniently located near Tippecanoe Mall on State Road 38 East and has plenty of free, on-site parking.

Don’t patronize this restaurant. It discriminates against the LGBT community. The chef told a lesbian couple the should take home a man on Valentine’s Day.

  2. Brian says:

My wife and I are straight. After reading the article regarding the lesbian couple being insulted on Valentines Day we will no longer be visiting one of our favored establishments. Your narrow mindedness is insulting even to straight couples.

  3. matt says:

Is this the restaurant who’s chef made inappropriate sexual comments to some women customers?

  4. Tyler Sinclair says:

The chain needs to send employees to some kind of training to learn common courtesy and respect and how to treat the customers. Remember, we’re the ones paying for your paycheck. My partner an I were in in early January and had to listen to homophobic slurs and rants by guy st grill and some friend of his. I for one will NEVER enter your establishment or any other Asahi for the remainder of my life. Also, please let your cook know that all gay people do not have AIDS!!

Dreadful food, dreadful place, dreadful people. AVOID

  6. gi lee says:

This place is total trash. Do not go here with high expectations.
I believe this place does not even have sushi man. Rolls are terror.
    Service are extremely poor.

  7. Derek says:

This is the best place for lunch hands down. Been going since 2004 when a friend brought me there my freshman year at Purdue. We went to a Bennihana’s in Las Vegas and it wasn’t even near as good. Please check this place out, you won’t regret it!

  8. Gerri says:

Terrible food…….our shrimp was like rubber, no exaggeration. Overpriced and not a very clean interior.

And yes…I agree, the service is lacking. You eat it and like it….cause you are definitely paying for it.

  9. Donna says:

We love Asahi. We go there for the sushi. We get great service. The man rolling the sushi is hard to understand. I wish I could eat there everyday!!!

  10. Mindy says:

I ate here once with some co-workers and there was a spider on my rice (he was crawling around on the hot rice) and they wanted me to pay for the entire meal. I was sort of expecting a free meal since I couldn’t eat after loading a ball of rice up on a fork with a big spider on the end but ended up paying for the salad and diet coke. I would pass on this place if I were you. They obviously have an insect problem and don’t really care about returning customers.

I’m an extremely objective person whom values fairness and truth above all else. I also come from a family that has owned and ran restaurants in Indiana since the mid 1800’s and have been a chef at Asahi for two years now as one of my jobs. Honestly, Asahi has no bug problems, I have not seen one ant and a fly is rare but happens due to door swings. We spray the floor edges regularly and I keep a clean kitchen. I actually remember this incident. We saw no proof of the spider. I told the owner Linda to comp the meal but she just thought you were scamming. Cuz the deal is, many people will lie to get a free meal. After seeing this post I can only guess you were being honest too. So for that I am sorry. Guess spiders happen too thought I have never seen one within the business and there isn’t a corner I haven’t seen.

Btw, if you want to come in a try again. Let us know about your last experience. We will make it up to you.

My partner and I went to Asahi for our weekly date night & I must say, we were pleasantly surprised! After reading the reviews here, I was a little skeptical, especially about the sushi ~ and that was even delicious (though the rolls were much smaller than normal). We both had the shrimp a filet mignon with fried rice – a little too many onions but all in all a really great meal!

The service was great too. The cook at our table was very funny and social, though I think we got the “good” one – the only other cook there seemed a little quite. Our waitress, not the most personable woman but she visited our table frequently and took good care of us.

Asahi is now at the top of my list of favorite restaurants here in Lafayette ~ unfortunately, that list is pretty short.

  12. Kristine says:

My boyfriend and I have been going to Asahi for years and we love it. The atmosphere is great. The food is reasonably priced. The waiters/waitresses are nice people, they just take some getting used to. As a huge sushi lover, I can tell you that theirs is good but Heisi/Nakama/Ah-Z/Naru in West Lafayette are better quality and more authentic. Kokoro in Lafayette is also amazing. I feel that Asahi’s sushi is extremely Americanized, but it’s still extremely tasty. Their dinners are also amazing.

  13. foodlover says:

i love asahi’s food! very good. the only food i don’t like there is the sushi. As a sushi lover i was very disapointed in the couple times i tried it there. Go to heisei in west lafayette for sushi. but the cook at you table food was great and a favorite of my husband and i’s.

  14. Disappointed says:

The service was horrible. Our table didn’t get our salad until the meal was out and did not get the soup until we asked for it. We ordered an appetizer, and while everyone else at our table got his or hers, we did not get ours until halfway through the meal. When the appetizer did arrive, it was so cold, mushy, and terrible tasting, we had to send it back (stay AWAY from the Sumai!). At the end of the meal, a woman came to clear our plates. She asked if I was finished, and I told her I was still eating. I turned to speak to my date, and the next thing I know, my plate is piled high with everyone else’s dishes and she is clearing it away. As someone who has worked for years in the restaurant business, I know how stressful a busy night can be on a waitress, but I also know what service is absolutely unacceptable, and this was the worst I have ever seen (It’s one thing to be busy and slow, it’s another to be rude about it!). It ruined my Valentines dinner, and I will never go back.

    • Haley says:

I doubt that happened. The service here is WONDERFUL! This is very unexpectable for this kind of place. I go here all the time and not once has anything happened like this

    • Employee of Asahi says:

This was before my stint started at Asahi, missed my expertise by a year. But for sure Valentine’s Day is one of our busiest days of the year. With a capacity that seats a bit over 150 we bout cap it off for hours on end on Valentine’s Day. But for the last two years we have managed it fairly well. 2012 went very smooth. Wait was barely longer than a normal night. Probably because we have decided to nearly double our staff from old employee stock on this day from now on, as well as New Years, graduation days, and prom nights too.

  15. LafayetteGuy says:

Service is good. Atmosphere is kinda quirky, yet admirable. Sushi is excellent and price is quite reasonable.

  16. Elizabeth says:

My husband and I started going to Asahi even before we moved to Lafayette – and through the years the restaurant has gained quite a following!

The food is excellent, with the sushi being a stand out and a good value. The service keeps getting better and better, and the nights here are *packed* so be sure to get in early for some amazingly good food!

  17. Rob says:

as the other reviewer said, it is comparable to Benihana’s. Stop in for their amazing lunch specials (e.g. chicken teriyaki for $6 or the “asahi maki sushi special” for $10).

so, great food at a great price, but their service is lacking. With a high turnover rate for (non-related) employees, it seems a bit dysfunctional.

  18. Chester says:

If you’re looking for a restaurant similar to Benihana’s, Asahi is the place. The building looks like it was an old Mexican restaurant, but the atmosphere inside is somewhat authentic.

The food is quite good at a more reasonable price than Benihana’s. The service and cooks are normally pretty friendly and helpful. This is a good place to go on a Friday or Saturday, because they surpisingly don’t ever seem to have much of a wait.
